Chapter 9: The Woman Who Held the Missing Truth

The woman at the gate looked nothing like I expected.

I imagined someone mysterious.

Someone dangerous.

Someone connected to the secrets destroying my family.

Instead, I saw a tired woman holding an old leather bag.

She looked like someone who had spent years carrying a burden too heavy for one person.

My father stopped walking when he saw her.

Not because he recognized her.

Because he remembered her.

“Marianne.””

The woman looked at him.

“Hello, Alexander.””

The way she said his name made everyone uncomfortable.

Not with anger.

With disappointment.

I stepped forward.

“You know my father?””

She looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

“You look exactly like her.””

My throat tightened.

“Like who?””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

My mother.

The woman I had spent fifteen years missing.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

“My name is Marianne Cole.””

Thomas immediately reacted.

“Cole?””

He looked shocked.

“Impossible.””

My father turned.

“You know her?””

Thomas slowly nodded.

“She worked with your mother.””

I stared at Marianne.

“With my mother?””

She nodded.

“Your mother was my best friend.””

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

Because my mother had not been alone.

Someone had been there.

Someone who knew the truth.

I led her into the mansion.

For the first time, nobody questioned my decisions.

Not Daniel.

Not Victoria.

Not even my father.

We gathered in the living room.

The same room where Daniel had thrown me out days earlier.

Now it held the biggest secrets of my life.

Marianne placed the leather bag on the table.

“I kept these because your mother asked me to.””

My hands tightened.

“What are they?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

Marianne looked at Alexander.

“Of what happened the night she disappeared.””

My father looked away.

That hurt.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“I told you she died.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“But you never told me why.””

Marianne opened the bag.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

And one old voice recorder.

She placed it on the table.

“Your mother recorded this before she vanished.””

Nobody moved.

Marianne pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother’s voice.

A voice I had not heard in fifteen years.

“Eleanor, if you are listening to this, something went wrong.””

I covered my mouth.

Tears came instantly.

Her voice continued.

“I need you to know something. Your father is not the only person hiding secrets.””

Everyone looked at Alexander.

My mother continued.

“The person who betrayed our family is someone we trusted.””

The recording crackled.

Then came the sentence that made my blood freeze.

“Eleanor, never trust the child who carries Alexander Vale’s name.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Victoria looked at my father.

Daniel looked confused.

Thomas looked terrified.

And I looked at Alexander.

“Child?””

My father stood slowly.

“Eleanor…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Who was she talking about?””

Marianne looked at me.

“I think you already know.””

I turned toward the family portrait.

Toward the empty spaces.

Toward every secret my father buried.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

From the unknown number.

I opened it.

A photograph appeared.

A man standing outside a building.

A man with my father’s eyes.

Underneath was one sentence.

*Meet your brother.*

I looked at the picture.

Then at Alexander.

May you like

Because the person who had spent years hiding from us was finally ready to step into the light.

And he wasn’t coming alone.
