Chapter 19: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

Two girls.

Two identical faces.

Two versions of the same life.

My hands felt numb.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Because sometimes the truth is so impossible that your mind rejects it before your heart can break.

My mother stepped closer.

“Eleanor…”

I looked at her.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

Her silence answered before her words did.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at Alexander.

He looked like the world had collapsed around him.

“Dad?””

He couldn’t speak.

That terrified me.

Because Alexander Vale always had an answer.

Always had a plan.

But now he looked lost.

Clara sat down slowly.

“I knew this day would come.””

Everyone turned.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at me.

“Your father didn’t have one daughter.””

The room went silent.

“He had twins.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Twins.

I touched my face.

My life.

My memories.

Everything suddenly had another shadow.

“When?””

My mother began crying.

“Twenty-eight years ago.””

I stared.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I knew I had one baby.””

I looked at Alexander.

“What happened?””

My father finally spoke.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“There was a complication during the birth.””

I waited.

“Your mother was unconscious. The doctors told me there was another child.””

I froze.

“Another child?””

He nodded.

“A girl.””

My chest tightened.

“What did you do?””

Alexander looked ashamed.

“I tried to find her.””

Tried.

The word hurt.

“What does that mean?””

He looked down.

“Someone took her.””

Nobody moved.

The room felt frozen.

“Who?””

Alexander looked at Thomas.

The old attorney closed his eyes.

“I was involved.””

My heart dropped.

“Again?””

Thomas looked at me.

“I found out Richard had connections at the hospital.””

My voice became cold.

“And you did nothing?””

“I searched.””

“For how long?””

“Years.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone searched. Everyone protected. Everyone lied.””

Thomas accepted the anger.

Because he deserved it.

Clara looked at the photograph.

“Richard didn’t want an heir.””

She looked at me.

“He wanted control.””

I understood.

Two daughters.

Two possible successors.

Two people who could challenge him.

So he removed one.

“Where is she now?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone became alert.

I answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

My voice.

Almost.

“Hello, Eleanor.””

My entire body froze.

“You’re her.””

A quiet laugh.

“Yes.””

I stepped away.

“Why?””

The woman on the phone was silent for a moment.

“Because I wanted to know if you were angry.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“After everything they did to us.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“Did you hate them?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I understood.

She wasn’t calling because she wanted power.

She wanted to know if I was like her.

“You were raised with love,” she said.

“And you weren’t.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

“My entire life, I was told your father abandoned me.””

I closed my eyes.

“His name is Alexander.””

“I know.””

“Then why hide?””

“Because every time I tried to reach him, someone stopped me.””

Richard.

Thomas.

The people around my family.

All the pieces connected.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then:

“Outside.””

The call ended.

A second later, the mansion gates opened.

Everyone rushed outside.

And there she was.

Standing beneath the lights.

My reflection.

But older somehow.

Harder.

Carrying pain I never knew.

She looked at me.

Neither of us moved.

Then she whispered:

“You got the life I was supposed to have.””

I wanted to hate her.

But I couldn’t.

Because I saw myself in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked surprised.

“For what?””

“For everything you lost.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

And for the first time, she looked less like an enemy.

More like my sister.

Her name was Elena.

Not Eleanor.

Elena Vale.

The child who vanished.

The daughter who was erased.

The person everyone had forgotten.

But before we could say anything else, she looked at Thomas.

Her expression changed.

“You knew.””

Thomas looked away.

Elena stepped forward.

“You knew where I was.””

Thomas whispered:

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell him?””

She pointed at Alexander.

Thomas’s answer was quiet.

“Because Richard threatened to kill you.””

Everyone froze.

Elena laughed sadly.

“So you chose silence.””

Thomas looked at her.

“I chose your life.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“You chose your fear.””

Then she turned to me.

“I didn’t come here for revenge.””

I looked at her.

“Then why?””

She handed me a folder.

Inside was one final document.

A document signed by Richard Vale.

The title made my heart stop.

*The Final Destruction Plan of Vale Holdings.*

Elena looked at me.

“Richard didn’t want the company.””

I opened the folder.

“He wanted something else.””

My eyes moved across the first page.

And I realized the truth.

The war was never about money.

May you like

It was about destroying the one thing Richard could never control.

The Vale family itself.
