Chapter 12: The Secret My Mother Left Behind
I replayed the recording three times.
Three times I waited for another voice.
Another clue.
Another explanation.
But every time, it ended the same way.
*The person who destroyed our family shares your blood.*
My own blood.
My own family.
The words followed me back to the mansion.
Nobody spoke during the drive.
Not Adrian.
Not Marianne.
Not me.
Because everyone was afraid of the same question.
Who?
When we arrived, Alexander was waiting outside.
The moment he saw Adrian, his face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“My son.””
Adrian stopped walking.
That single phrase carried years of abandonment.
“You don’t get to call me that.””
Alexander lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You lost a daughter’s trust because you hid the truth.””
He pointed at himself.
“You lost a son because you disappeared from his life.””
Alexander accepted every word.
And somehow, that made it harder.
I had wanted him to fight.
To defend himself.
But he didn’t.
“I was wrong.””
The simple admission shocked everyone.
Adrian laughed quietly.
“After all these years, that’s all you have?””
“No.””
Alexander looked at him.
“I have regret.””
The silence was heavy.
I walked between them.
“Enough.””
Both men looked at me.
“I don’t need another war.””
I held up the recording.
“I need answers.””
Alexander saw the device.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“Richard Hale.””
My father went still.
“He’s alive?””
“Yes.””
Alexander looked away.
“That means he finally chose a side.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Before he answered, the front door opened.
Victoria walked in.
She looked exhausted.
“I found something.””
Nobody moved.
“What?””
She held a folder.
“I went through my mother’s old belongings.””
She looked at me.
“There was a letter.””
I took it.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the first line made my heart stop.
*To Eleanor Vale.*
I opened it.
Inside was a confession.
Not from my mother.
From Victoria’s.
She admitted she had known about Richard Vale.
She admitted she had helped hide information.
But the final sentence was what mattered.
*The person you are searching for is not trying to take Vale Holdings. They are trying to erase the Vale family completely.*
I looked up.
“Why would someone want that?””
Nobody answered.
Then the lights flickered.
Again.
The same as before.
Everyone reached for their phones.
A message appeared.
This time, it wasn’t from an unknown number.
It was from Richard Vale.
*You finally found the truth.*
Another message appeared.
*Now come find the woman who started it all.*
My hands shook.
Then the final message arrived.
*Your mother is waiting.*
I looked at Alexander.
At Adrian.
At Victoria.
Nobody spoke.
Because we all understood the same thing.
My mother was alive.
And whoever had hidden her for fifteen years had just invited us to find her.
But the biggest question remained.
May you like
Was she a victim waiting to be rescued?
Or was she the final secret my family had been trying to bury?
