Chapter 5: The Man Who Should Have Been Dead

Nobody moved.

The alarm continued echoing through the mansion.

A sound that felt almost unreal.

Because the person standing outside the gate could not exist.

My father was dead.

I had watched the funeral.

I had held his ashes.

I had read the obituary with my own eyes.

“Thomas,” I whispered.

But Thomas looked just as shocked as I felt.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel stared at me.

“You said your father died.””

“He did.””

Victoria looked terrified.

Not confused.

Terrified.

And that was what caught my attention.

I turned toward her.

“You know something.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Victoria.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

The way she said it told me she knew enough to be afraid.

The guard returned.

“Ms. Vale, he refuses to leave.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Eleanor, you don’t have to see him.””

But I was already walking.

Because there were questions that had followed me my entire life.

Why did my father hide so many things?

Why did he create secret protections around me?

Why did he leave letters meant for moments he supposedly would never witness?

And most importantly…

Who was the man waiting outside?

The front gates opened slowly.

The cold night air rushed through the entrance.

A figure stood beneath the streetlight.

Older.

Different.

But familiar.

The shape of his face.

The way he stood.

The eyes.

My heart refused to accept what my mind already understood.

“Dad?””

The man looked at me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

“Eleanor.””

My knees almost gave out.

Daniel stood behind me, frozen.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Alexander Vale stepped forward.

“I know this is impossible to understand.””

I stared at him.

“Impossible?””

My voice cracked.

“You died.””

His expression broke.

“I needed everyone to believe that.””

The anger came before the tears.

“You let me mourn you.””

“Yes.””

“You let me think I was alone.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked down.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

The words surprised him.

But they were true.

Everyone who hurt me had claimed they were protecting me.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Even him.

Alexander looked past me at the mansion.

“At least now I know I arrived in time.””

“In time for what?””

His eyes moved to Daniel.

And Daniel suddenly looked uncomfortable.

“What does that mean?””

My father’s expression hardened.

“It means your husband was never the biggest threat.””

The entire group went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You don’t know me.””

Alexander looked at him.

“I know exactly who you are.””

Those words hit differently.

Because Alexander had been watching.

“How long?”” I asked.

My father looked back at me.

“Years.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“You watched?””

“I had people protecting you.””

“I didn’t need protection.””

“You did.””

His voice softened.

“Because I knew someone would eventually discover your identity.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Alexander looked at Victoria.

She immediately looked away.

The answer was obvious.

But somehow, it still hurt.

“Victoria?””

My sister closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know everything.””

My father’s voice became cold.

“She knew enough.””

Victoria finally broke.

“I was trying to get back what was mine!””

I stared at her.

“By destroying me?””

“You had everything!””

“No,” I said quietly.

“You thought I had everything.””

Victoria looked at me.

“You had his love.””

The words hung in the air.

And suddenly, I understood.

This was never only about money.

It was about a family that had been broken long before Daniel entered our lives.

My father stepped closer.

“Eleanor, there is something you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“Daniel did not betray you by accident.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

Alexander pulled a document from his coat.

“I found proof that he was approached.””

“By who?””

He handed me the paper.

At the bottom was a signature.

A name I recognized.

A name that made Victoria’s face turn completely white.

Because it belonged to someone who had been dead for years.

My father looked at me.

“Your marriage was never the beginning of this betrayal.””

May you like

I stared at the signature.

And realized Daniel’s affair was only the first move in a much bigger plan.
