Chapter 3: The Family He Never Met

The message remained glowing on Daniel’s phone.

A name I had not seen in twelve years.

A name I never expected to appear again.

My father’s former attorney.

Thomas Vale.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“What is it?”” he asked.

I handed the phone back.

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

But Daniel laughed.

A nervous, broken laugh.

“Nothing I need to worry about? Eleanor, my company is being taken away. My house is being taken away. My wife has been hiding an entire life from me, and you’re telling me there’s nothing to worry about?””

I stared at him.

“The difference between us, Daniel, is that I had a life before you.””

The words hurt him because they were true.

For years, he thought he was the center of my world.

He never considered that I had my own.

The next morning, the mansion was filled with lawyers, financial advisors, and board members.

The same place where Daniel once held private parties now looked like a courtroom.

I sat at the long dining table.

The same table where Victoria had once sat across from me during a charity dinner, pretending to admire my jewelry.

Now she sat quietly, unable to look at me.

Daniel walked in wearing yesterday’s suit.

For the first time since I met him, he looked small.

“Can we talk?”” he asked.

I looked up.

“About what?””

“About us.””

I almost smiled.

“Us ended when you put my suitcase outside.””

His face tightened.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary.””

I touched my stomach.

“Destroying your family is a choice.””

Daniel looked down.

For a moment, I saw regret.

Real regret.

But regret after losing everything was not the same as love.

“Did you ever love me?”” he asked.

The question surprised me.

Because once, years ago, I would have answered immediately.

“Yes.””

Now I took my time.

“I loved the man I thought you were.””

Daniel swallowed.

“And who am I?””

I looked toward the window.

“You’re the man who showed me exactly who he was when he thought I had nothing.””

Before he could respond, Margaret entered the room.

“Eleanor, there’s someone here to see you.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

She stepped aside.

An older man walked in.

Silver hair.

Black suit.

Familiar eyes.

“Hello, Eleanor.””

I stood slowly.

“Thomas.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is that?””

Thomas ignored him and walked toward me.

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

He handed me a small box.

My hands trembled when I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

The last letter he ever wrote to me.

I had searched for it for years.

“Where did you get this?””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“Your father wanted you to receive it when the person closest to you revealed their true intentions.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas turned to him.

“It means Mr. Ashford was never the reason your father trusted him.””

Daniel frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“You were chosen because Eleanor believed you loved her.””

The room became silent.

Thomas continued.

“But your father also prepared for the possibility that you would love what she had instead.””

Daniel looked at me.

His expression shifted from anger to fear.

“What else did your father know?””

I opened the letter.

The first line made my hands freeze.

*My dearest Eleanor, if you are reading this, someone has tried to take away the life you built. Remember this: the greatest protection I left you was never money. It was the truth about your family.*

I looked up.

“What family?””

Thomas hesitated.

That was when I knew.

There was something even I didn’t know.

Daniel noticed too.

“What are you hiding?””

Thomas reached into his briefcase and pulled out another file.

“This was meant to be revealed only after a betrayal involving your marriage.””

My stomach tightened.

“Thomas…”

He placed the file in front of me.

On the cover was a photograph.

A man I had never met.

But the name underneath made my blood run cold.

*Alexander Vale.*

My father.

My mother.

And a secret about my birth that had been hidden from me my entire life.

Thomas looked at me quietly.

“Eleanor, before you destroy Daniel Ashford’s empire…”

He pushed the file closer.

“You need to know who actually built the empire you inherited.””

I opened the folder.

And the first page revealed something that changed everything.

I was not just the woman Daniel abandoned.

I was the reason his entire world existed.
