Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Never Gone
Nobody moved.
The video kept playing.
The dining room on the screen looked exactly like ours.
The same wooden table.
The same fireplace.
The same family photographs.
But the date in the corner made everyone’s blood run cold.
Three days before our dinner.
Three days before Ethan returned.
Three days before Vanessa was exposed.
Daniel stepped closer to the screen.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all saw the same thing.
A man sitting at the end of the table.
A man who should have been buried two years ago.
My hands began to shake.
“No…”
Daniel turned toward me.
“Grandma?””
I couldn’t look away.
The man on the screen slowly lifted his head.
The camera captured his face.
My husband.
Robert.
Alive.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
A sound escaped my throat.
It wasn’t a scream.
It was something worse.
A broken breath from someone whose entire world had just collapsed.
“That’s impossible,” Mark whispered.
Ethan stared at the screen.
His face had lost all color.
“He was alive.””
Nobody understood.
Nobody could.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“You knew?””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I thought he was dead.””
On the screen, Robert was speaking.
The audio was faint, but the room was silent enough to hear.
“I need you to finish this.””
Vanessa appeared in the video.
She looked younger.
Less confident.
More nervous.
“I can’t keep doing this, Robert.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You were meeting him?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The video continued.
Robert leaned forward.
“You already did the difficult part.””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“I didn’t expect Ethan to survive.””
A painful silence filled the room.
Daniel clenched his fists.
“You knew.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I knew he survived.””
Ethan stared at her.
“You left me there.””
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“I thought Robert would handle it.””
Daniel looked back at the screen.
The truth was becoming clearer with every second.
Robert wasn’t a victim.
He wasn’t a man caught in someone else’s crime.
He was the person controlling everything.
The video continued.
Robert placed a folder on the table.
“I need the documents.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“They’re gone.””
Robert’s expression changed.
“You lost them?””
“No. Someone found them.””
A pause.
Then Robert asked:
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
Toward the hidden teddy bear.
Toward Mia.
Everyone in the room stopped breathing.
“She did.””
Mia stepped backward.
“Me?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.
“She found the papers.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What papers?””
Mia’s voice trembled.
“The ones in Grandpa’s old house.””
I knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, what happened?””
Mia looked at the floor.
“I went there because I saw Vanessa leaving.””
Daniel’s face softened.
“You followed her?””
Mia nodded.
“I found a box.””
The room went quiet.
“What was inside?”” Ethan asked.
Mia looked at the teddy bear.
“Pictures.””
She swallowed.
“And names.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“Your grandfather was covering something bigger.””
The video showed Robert standing.
“I will take care of the girl.””
Every person in the room reacted.
I grabbed Mia and pulled her close.
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“What did he mean by that?””
Vanessa looked away.
“He wanted the evidence gone.””
“And Mia?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That answer was enough.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“You were going to hurt my niece.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t.””
“Then why did you slap her?””
She had no response.
The room fell silent.
Detective Harris walked toward the screen.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed.
“In the background.””
The video showed a reflection in the window.
Someone else had been there.
A person standing behind Robert.
A person listening.
The camera zoomed in slightly.
Daniel leaned closer.
Then his eyes widened.
“No.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel pointed at the screen.
“That person.””
Everyone stared.
The reflection was blurry.
But recognizable.
A face.
A person from their family.
Someone who had been missing for years.
Someone who had helped create the entire nightmare.
The video ended.
The room stayed silent.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A voice came from the hallway.
“I guess you finally found the truth.””
A woman stepped inside.
Daniel froze.
Because he knew her.
Everyone did.
It was Daniel’s mother.
May you like
Alive.
And standing in front of them.
