Chapter 4: The Boy Who Came Home

Nobody spoke.

Not one person.

The only sound was the rain hitting the windows.

Daniel stared at the doorway like his mind couldn’t accept what his eyes were seeing.

“Ethan?””

The man standing there didn’t answer immediately.

His face showed a hundred emotions at once.

Fear.

Relief.

Sadness.

Then he slowly nodded.

“Hi, Daniel.””

Daniel moved first.

He crossed the room so quickly that the chair behind him fell over.

He grabbed Ethan and hugged him.

A grown man who had spent three years pretending he was strong suddenly broke down like a child.

“You’re alive.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel pulled away.

“Sorry?””

His voice cracked.

“You disappeared.””

“I know.””

“Everyone thought you were dead.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you come home?””

Ethan looked past him.

Toward Vanessa.

“Because I was scared.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“No.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You should have known I would come back eventually.””

Daniel turned.

“What is going on?””

Ethan walked into the room slowly.

Behind him stood an older man carrying a small folder.

Nobody recognized him.

Yet.

Ethan noticed our confusion.

“This is Detective Harris.””

The man nodded.

“We’ve been looking for the right moment to reveal everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“Reveal what?””

Ethan looked at the teddy bear.

“That Vanessa was never the victim.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

Ethan ignored her.

“Three years ago, I discovered something about her.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

Ethan took a breath.

“She had been stealing money from my father’s business.””

Mark’s face changed.

“What?””

Ethan nodded.

“I found documents. Bank transfers. Fake signatures.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Ethan continued.

“She found out I knew.””

Daniel looked at the teddy bear.

“And the stairs?””

Ethan’s eyes lowered.

“That night, she followed me to the old house.””

The room became silent.

“I told her I was going to tell the family.””

Vanessa’s voice became desperate.

“Because you didn’t understand!””

Ethan looked at her.

“No. I understood everything.””

He turned to Daniel.

“She pushed me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was unbearable.

“But you said the video wasn’t complete.””

Ethan nodded.

“Because the camera stopped when the bear fell.””

Mia stepped forward.

“I found another button.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

Mia hugged the teddy bear.

“I didn’t know what it did.””

Daniel knelt beside her.

“What button?””

Mia pointed to the tiny blue patch on the bear’s foot.

“I pressed it before dinner.””

Ethan looked shocked.

“Play it.””

Daniel pressed the button.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then another recording began.

This one wasn’t from the stairs.

It was from after.

A woman’s voice.

Vanessa.

“Where did you hide the papers?””

A young Ethan answered.

“You’ll never find them.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””

Daniel’s hands shook.

The recording continued.

Ethan’s voice became weaker.

“Someone will find out.””

Then Vanessa said something that made everyone in the room freeze.

“I already made sure nobody would believe you.””

The recording ended.

No one breathed.

No one moved.

Vanessa looked around.

She knew it was over.

But then she smiled.

Not the nervous smile from earlier.

A different one.

Cold.

Confident.

“You all think you won.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at Detective Harris.

Then at Ethan.

“You really thought I came here without a backup plan?””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Vanessa, don’t make this worse.””

She laughed softly.

“You still don’t know what Ethan did after that night.””

Daniel looked at his brother.

“What is she talking about?””

Ethan’s face changed.

For the first time since walking through the door, he looked afraid.

Vanessa slowly reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Then placed it on the table.

“This is the reason Ethan disappeared.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“What’s inside?””

Vanessa smiled.

“A confession.””

She pushed it toward him.

“And it has Ethan’s signature.””

Daniel stared at the paper.

Then slowly opened it.

The first line made his blood run cold.

May you like

Because it began with four words:

“I caused the accident.””
