Chapter 5: The Confession That Wasn’t
Daniel stared at the paper in his hands.
The room that had once been filled with laughter and Christmas music now felt like a courtroom.
Everyone waited.
Nobody dared to speak.
He read the first line again.
“I caused the accident.””
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Then he looked up at Ethan.
“Is this your handwriting?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than anything.
Daniel took a step back.
“Ethan.””
His voice cracked.
“Tell me this isn’t real.””
Ethan looked at his brother.
“I wrote those words.””
A wave of shock moved through the room.
Mark shook his head.
“No.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Let him explain.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“Explain what? My brother just admitted he caused whatever happened.””
Ethan looked down.
“I did write it.””
He paused.
“But I didn’t write it because it was true.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“That’s convenient.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa’s expression changed back into the confident mask everyone had known.
“I’m saying Ethan knows exactly what he did.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You’re still doing this.””
“Doing what?””
“Pretending you’re innocent.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You disappeared for three years.””
She pointed at the envelope.
“You left behind a confession.””
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Who do you think people will believe? The woman who stayed and built a life with you, or the brother who vanished?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because deep down, he knew something was wrong.
Not because of the evidence.
Because of Vanessa.
The way she spoke.
The way she controlled every room she entered.
The way she always had an explanation ready before anyone finished asking a question.
Mia suddenly tugged on my sleeve.
“Grandma.””
I looked down.
Her face was pale.
“There’s something else.””
Daniel heard her.
“What else, Mia?””
She looked at the teddy bear.
“I didn’t show you everything.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“What do you mean?””
Mia ignored her.
She carefully took the teddy bear from Daniel.
Then she turned it around.
“There’s another memory card.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Where?””
Mia pointed to the inside seam.
“I found it when the fur ripped.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Mia, why didn’t you tell us?””
She lowered her eyes.
“Because Vanessa told me nobody would believe me.””
The room went silent.
My heart broke hearing those words.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You threatened her?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Mia whispered:
“She said if I told anyone, my family would get hurt.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked around.
Nobody was defending her anymore.
Not even a little.
She took a step backward.
“You’re all misunderstanding.””
Ethan gave a bitter laugh.
“No. They’re finally understanding.””
Mia handed the teddy bear to Detective Harris.
He carefully opened the hidden compartment.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
He removed it.
Then looked at everyone.
“This could change everything.””
Vanessa suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
She reached toward him.
Detective Harris stepped away.
“Don’t.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid of someone other than Ethan.
The detective inserted the card into a small device.
The screen turned on.
A video appeared.
At first, it showed darkness.
Then a staircase.
The old Oakridge house.
Daniel covered his mouth.
Because he recognized it immediately.
“That’s the night Ethan disappeared.””
The video shook slightly.
A child’s voice could be heard.
Ethan.
Then Vanessa entered the frame.
But she wasn’t alone.
Everyone leaned closer.
A second person appeared.
Someone standing behind her.
Someone who had been hidden from the family for years.
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
Because he recognized that person too.
Vanessa looked at the screen.
All the confidence disappeared.
“That’s impossible.””
Detective Harris looked at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The video continued.
Ethan was standing on the stairs.
Vanessa was yelling.
But the second person was holding something.
Something that made Daniel stand completely still.
Because it wasn’t Vanessa who pushed Ethan.
It wasn’t Ethan’s accident.
It was someone else.
Someone they had trusted.
The video froze.
And before Detective Harris could continue playing it, Vanessa grabbed the device and smashed it against the table.
The screen went black.
Everyone screamed.
Daniel stared at her.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa breathed heavily.
Then she whispered:
“You don’t understand what you just uncovered.””
She looked toward the hallway.
Toward the person who had arrived with Ethan.
And said:
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Everyone turned.
Detective Harris slowly looked behind him.
May you like
Because the person Vanessa was talking to…
Was standing right there.
