Chapter 2: The Video Hidden Inside

Nobody understood what Vanessa meant.

Not at first.

Daniel’s hand stopped halfway toward the teddy bear.

“Where is who?”” he asked.

Vanessa looked around the room.

For the first time since I met her, she wasn’t pretending.

Her perfect smile was gone.

Her calm voice was gone.

The woman who always seemed in control was now terrified.

Mia held the teddy bear against her chest.

I moved closer to her.

“Daniel,” I said softly, “don’t take it from her.””

He looked at me.

“Grandma, we need to know what’s on it.””

“I know.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“But we also need to know why she’s scared.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re all misunderstanding.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then explain.””

She swallowed.

“That bear doesn’t mean anything.””

Mia immediately spoke.

“Yes, it does.””

Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward her.

“Mia.””

The way she said the child’s name made my stomach tighten.

It wasn’t a warning.

It was a threat.

I stepped between them.

“You will not speak to her like that.””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel reached out his hand.

“Mia, can I see the teddy bear?””

Mia hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“Be careful.””

He took the toy gently.

For something so small, it suddenly felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Everyone gathered around as Daniel examined it.

“There’s nothing here,” he said.

Vanessa let out a small breath.

“There you go.””

But Mia shook her head.

“You have to press the button.””

Daniel looked at the teddy bear.

“What button?””

Mia pointed to the blue jacket.

“Under the pocket.””

Daniel turned it over.

His fingers found a tiny hidden switch.

The room went silent again.

Vanessa’s face became pale.

Daniel looked up.

“How did you know about this?””

Mia looked at him sadly.

“Because I turned it on.””

Vanessa whispered.

“No…”

Daniel pressed the button.

At first, nothing happened.

Then a faint red light blinked.

The teddy bear was recording.

My son-in-law Mark leaned closer.

“That’s impossible. That toy is just…”

The bear suddenly played a sound.

A voice.

A woman’s voice.

Everyone froze.

It was Vanessa.

But the recording wasn’t from our dinner.

It sounded like it came from somewhere else.

The audio was muffled, but clear enough.

“Please stop crying.””

A child’s voice answered.

“I want my mommy.””

Then Vanessa’s voice again.

“You should have listened.””

My hand flew to my mouth.

Daniel’s face changed.

“That’s her.””

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

There were footsteps.

A door opening.

Then a terrified scream.

The sound cut off.

The dining room felt like it had lost all air.

Vanessa suddenly lunged forward.

“Give me that!””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

“You don’t understand!””

“Then explain!””

Her eyes filled with panic.

“I can explain everything.””

Mia shook her head.

“No, you can’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I found this too.””

My heart sank.

“Mia, what is that?””

She handed it to me.

The paper was old and wrinkled.

There was a name written on it.

A name I recognized.

A name that made Daniel stop breathing.

I unfolded the paper slowly.

And when I read the words, I felt the room spin.

Because the boy Vanessa was accused of pushing down the stairs…

Was not a stranger.

He was someone from our own family.

Someone who had disappeared three years ago.

Daniel grabbed the paper from my hand.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Why is my brother’s name written here?”” he asked.

Vanessa said nothing.

The silence was worse than any answer.

Daniel took another step toward her.

“Vanessa…”

May you like

His voice cracked.

“Where is my little brother?””
