Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Stairs

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence told us more than any confession could have.

Daniel stood in the middle of the dining room, holding the old piece of paper in his shaking hand. The Christmas lights reflected in his eyes, but there was no warmth left in them.

Only confusion.

Only pain.

“My brother’s name,” he repeated.

“Why is my brother’s name on this?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet, but everyone heard the anger underneath it.

“Not anymore. You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””

Mia stayed close to me, gripping my sweater.

I could feel her trembling.

She had carried this secret inside her for days, maybe longer. She had sat across from Vanessa at this dinner table, watched everyone praise her, watched Daniel talk about their future wedding, and somehow found the courage to stand up.

A child had done what every adult in that room had failed to do.

She told the truth.

Daniel lifted the paper.

“This is from the old Oakridge house.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward him.

That small reaction was enough.

Everyone noticed.

My son Mark slowly stood from his chair.

“The Oakridge house?”” he asked.

Daniel nodded.

“The one where my parents lived before they moved.””

My stomach tightened.

Because I remembered.

Three years earlier, Daniel’s younger brother, Ethan, had disappeared.

The official story was that Ethan ran away.

The police searched for months.

The family fell apart.

Daniel never accepted it.

He kept saying his little brother wouldn’t just leave.

But eventually, people stopped asking questions.

People got tired of waiting for an answer that never came.

Until tonight.

Until a teddy bear brought the past back to our table.

Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.

“You knew Ethan.””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No. I didn’t.””

“You just reacted to his name.””

“I didn’t!””

Her voice cracked.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then why are you afraid?””

Vanessa looked around the room.

At all of us.

At the faces of people who had welcomed her.

People who had trusted her.

Then she whispered:

“Because you don’t know what happened.””

Nobody moved.

“What happened?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

“I was trying to help him.””

Mark laughed bitterly.

“Help him?””

He pointed toward the teddy bear.

“Is that what you call this?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Mark said.

“You’re right. We don’t. Because every time someone asks a question, you change the subject.””

Daniel’s hands tightened around the teddy bear.

“Tell me about Ethan.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

For a moment, I thought she might finally admit everything.

Instead, she said something nobody expected.

“Ethan wasn’t pushed.””

The room went still.

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“He fell.””

Mia immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone turned toward her.

The little girl stepped forward.

“He didn’t fall.””

Vanessa looked frightened.

“Mia, you weren’t there.””

“Yes, I was.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

Mia looked at me.

“I saw it.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Mia… what are you talking about?””

She looked down.

“I followed Vanessa that day.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Mia continued.

“I wanted to know why she was always going into Grandpa’s old house.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You were there?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Mia’s voice became smaller.

“I saw Ethan crying.””

The room felt colder.

“He told Vanessa he was going to tell everyone what she did.””

Daniel’s breathing became heavier.

“What did she do?””

Mia looked at Vanessa.

“She hurt him.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Enough!””

The entire room jumped.

Her calm mask disappeared.

“You don’t know what you saw!””

Mia flinched.

I immediately pulled her behind me.

“Stay away from her.””

Vanessa froze.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“You have to believe me.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Because if you watch that video, you’ll see the truth.””

That was the strangest thing she could have said.

Because moments ago, she had been terrified of the teddy bear.

Now she was telling us to watch it.

Daniel slowly looked down at the toy.

“What truth?””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“The truth about Ethan.””

Daniel pressed the button again.

The red light blinked.

The recording started.

This time, the sound was clearer.

There were footsteps.

A young boy crying.

Then Ethan’s voice.

“Vanessa, please. I won’t tell anyone.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

He knew that voice.

Even after three years.

He knew.

The recording continued.

Vanessa’s voice came next.

“You already ruined everything.””

A loud crash.

A scream.

Then silence.

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

But she wasn’t looking at us.

She was staring at the teddy bear.

And then she whispered something that made Daniel drop it.

“That’s not the whole recording.””

The bear suddenly stopped.

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa lifted her eyes.

“There’s another file.””

She swallowed.

“One that Mia doesn’t know about.””

Daniel stared.

“Where?””

Vanessa pointed toward the teddy bear.

“Hidden deeper inside.””

And then the front door of my house suddenly opened.

A voice came from the hallway.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

A man nobody had seen in three years.

Daniel’s face went completely white.

Because the stranger standing there was wearing the same scar above his eyebrow.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

It was Ethan.

But he wasn’t alone.

May you like

He had brought someone with him.

Someone Vanessa never expected to see.
