Chapter 8: The Mother’s Secret
Nobody expected that name.
Daniel’s mother.
My daughter.
The woman who had left years ago and rarely came home.
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“My mother?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
Then back at Vanessa.
“What does my mother have to do with any of this?””
Vanessa took a slow breath.
“Everything.””
The rain outside grew louder.
It sounded like the whole house was listening.
Ethan looked exhausted.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“You want me to?””
“Yes.””
Ethan’s voice was steady.
“He deserves to know.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Three years ago, Ethan found out your grandfather wasn’t the only person hiding money.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“What money?””
“Your family business.””
Mark looked confused.
“Robert’s company?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your mother had been taking money from it for years.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“She was in debt.””
“No.””
“She was desperate.””
“Stop saying that.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“My mother wouldn’t do that.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You said the same thing about me.””
That hurt because it was true.
Everyone had believed what they wanted to believe.
We ignored the signs.
We trusted the smiles.
We accepted the explanations.
Ethan stepped forward.
“I found the records.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And you confronted her?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Ethan looked down.
“She begged me not to tell anyone.””
The room became quiet.
“She said she could fix it.””
Daniel swallowed.
“And then?””
“Then Vanessa found out I knew.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Because Robert told me.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Your grandfather was working with you?””
Vanessa looked away.
“At first.””
The answer confused everyone.
“At first?””
She nodded.
“Robert wanted Ethan scared.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“He wanted me gone.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“But he didn’t expect me to take it that far.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with regret for the first time.
“I thought I could control the situation.””
Nobody spoke.
“I thought I could scare Ethan into silence.””
She looked at the floor.
“But Robert had another plan.””
Ethan nodded.
“He wanted me blamed.””
Daniel looked at the teddy bear.
“And the confession?””
Vanessa answered.
“Fake.””
She looked at Ethan.
“He forced Ethan to write it.””
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
“Why?””
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
“Because if I disappeared, everyone would believe I ran away.””
The room went silent.
A terrible realization settled over everyone.
The missing brother.
The confession.
The lies.
It had all been planned.
But one question remained.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Why are you telling us this now?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
Then she looked at Detective Harris.
“Because he was supposed to destroy the evidence.””
Detective Harris lowered his eyes.
“And he didn’t.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Because even he realized what Robert did was wrong.””
Daniel looked at the detective.
“Is that true?””
The detective nodded.
“I found Ethan after the accident.””
Daniel stared.
“Why didn’t you bring him home?””
The detective looked broken.
“Because Robert threatened my family.””
Nobody spoke.
The truth kept getting uglier.
Then Mia suddenly pointed at the teddy bear.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
She looked confused.
“The recording isn’t finished.””
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?””
Mia touched the toy.
“There’s one more file.””
Vanessa’s face went white.
“No.””
Mia looked at her.
“You know about it.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Daniel pressed the final button.
The screen turned on.
A new video appeared.
But this time, it wasn’t from the staircase.
It was from inside this very house.
The camera showed the dining room.
The same room where everyone was standing.
And the date on the screen was from three days before the dinner.
Daniel leaned closer.
Because in the video, someone was sitting at this exact table.
Someone who had never been mentioned.
Someone who had been planning everything.
And then the camera turned toward the person’s face.
Daniel froze.
May you like
Because the person on the screen was alive.
And they were supposed to be dead.
