Chapter 9: The Girl Behind the Locked Door
The private facility stood on a quiet road forty miles outside the city.
It had no sign above the entrance, only a brass plaque bearing the name of a medical foundation. The windows were tinted, the grounds surrounded by a tall fence, and the security cameras followed Daniel's car as it approached.
Claire sat beside him, gripping the edge of her seat.
“Vanessa wouldn't send us here unless she wanted something.””
“Maybe she wants us to find Emily.””
“Or maybe she wants us to find a grave.””
Daniel glanced at her.
“Don't say that.””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“I've spent six months wondering whether my daughter was alive. I can't do this again.””
He reached across and took her hand.
“We'll find out together.””
At the entrance, a security guard asked for identification.
Daniel showed him the document Vanessa had left behind.
The guard's expression changed immediately.
“Please wait here.””
He disappeared into a small office.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Finally, a woman in a white coat emerged from the building.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Dr. Evelyn Shaw. I'm the medical director here.””
“Where is Emily?””
Dr. Shaw hesitated.
“Before I answer that, I need to explain why she's been under our care.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Is she alive?””
“Yes.””
Claire nearly collapsed.
Daniel caught her elbow.
“Can we see her?””
“There's a complication.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What kind of complication?””
Dr. Shaw lowered her voice.
“Emily was admitted under a different name nearly two years ago. She was suffering from a severe respiratory infection and had been neglected for some time. The person who brought her here claimed to be her legal guardian.””
“Who?””
“Vanessa Vale.””
Claire closed her eyes.
Dr. Shaw continued.
“Vanessa paid for Emily's treatment and insisted that her identity remain confidential. She told us the child had no living relatives.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“She lied.””
“Yes. We recently discovered inconsistencies in her paperwork. When we contacted the authorities, someone intervened and ordered us to stop investigating.””
“Who?””
Dr. Shaw looked toward the building.
“Richard Hale.””
Daniel turned toward the attorney, who had followed them in a separate car.
Hale removed his glasses.
“I was trying to protect Emily from being taken into the wrong custody.””
“You knew she was here?””
“I knew Vanessa had arranged for her treatment. I didn't know the full extent of what she had done until yesterday.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No. But I can prove it.””
Hale handed Dr. Shaw a sealed document.
She examined it, then nodded reluctantly.
“Emily is in the east wing.””
Claire began to cry.
“Please,” she whispered.
“Take me to her.””
The doctor led them through a series of corridors until they reached a small room at the end of the hall.
A little girl sat beside the window, coloring on a sheet of paper.
She had dark hair, a small nose, and the same crescent-shaped birthmark visible in the photograph.
When she looked up, Daniel felt his breath catch.
She looked like Sophie.
But she also had Claire's eyes.
The girl studied the strangers standing in her doorway.
“Are you here to take me somewhere else?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“No, sweetheart.””
Emily put down her crayon.
“Vanessa said people would come for me one day.””
Daniel crouched so that he was at her eye level.
“What's your name, sweetheart?””
“Emily.””
“Do you know who I am?””
She shook her head.
“I'm Daniel. And this is Claire.””
Emily stared at Claire for a long moment.
Then she pointed at the photograph attached to the woman's key ring.
“That's the lady Vanessa says is bad.””
Claire's knees weakened.
“Why did she say that?””
Emily looked down.
“She said my real mommy left me because she didn't want me.””
Claire began to sob.
“No, baby. No. I never left you.””
Emily's eyes widened.
“Are you my mommy?””
Claire nodded.
Emily slowly stood.
For several seconds, she didn't move.
Then she walked toward Claire and touched her face with one small hand.
“You look like the lady in my dreams.””
Claire fell to her knees and wrapped her arms around her daughter.
Emily stiffened at first, uncertain what to do.
Then she began to cry.
“Mommy?””
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“You came back?””
“I never stopped looking for you.””
Daniel turned away, unable to watch without tears filling his own eyes.
He had spent months believing one daughter was dead and another might not belong to him.
Now he was standing in a room with both of them alive, separated by only a few miles and a lifetime of lies.
Dr. Shaw quietly stepped into the hallway.
Daniel followed her.
“Why was Emily neglected?””
The doctor's expression became serious.
“Vanessa visited regularly, but she rarely stayed long. She paid for the treatment and made certain Emily wasn't released without her approval.””
“Why?””
“Because Emily's medical records contained something Vanessa was desperate to conceal.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“What?””
Dr. Shaw opened a folder.
“Emily was born with a rare genetic condition. It isn't immediately life-threatening, but it requires regular monitoring. Her biological father carried a hereditary mutation, and your family history contains a related marker.””
Daniel stared at her.
“My family?””
“Yes. We found the same marker in records associated with your father's medical history.””
He thought of Hale's explanation.
His father had been trying to protect both children.
But there was still something missing.
“Why would that matter to Vanessa?””
Dr. Shaw hesitated.
“Because the original trust documents included a provision for children with that condition. Your father had established a medical fund that could only be accessed by a verified biological descendant.””
Daniel understood.
“Emily's treatment was supposed to be paid for by the trust.””
“Yes. But the fund was never activated because the identity records had been altered.””
“Who altered them?””
Dr. Shaw handed him a second document.
A signature appeared at the bottom.
Vanessa Vale.
Daniel stared at it.
“She signed the false guardianship papers.””
“Yes.””
Before he could respond, a nurse hurried toward them.
“Dr. Shaw, there's a problem.””
The doctor turned.
“What is it?””
“The patient in room twelve is missing.””
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“Which patient?””
“Emily's guardian. The woman who came to visit this morning.””
Dr. Shaw went pale.
“Vanessa?””
The nurse nodded.
“She was released from the visitor area twenty minutes ago. She signed out under a false name.””
Daniel rushed back into Emily's room.
Claire was holding her daughter on the bed, gently brushing her hair.
Emily looked up.
“Is the bad lady coming back?””
Daniel crouched beside them.
“Not if I can stop her.””
Emily reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“Vanessa gave me this before she left.””
Daniel unfolded it.
Inside was a photograph of Sophie sleeping in her crib.
Beneath the photograph was a handwritten message.
*You found the wrong daughter.*
Daniel's heart pounded.
Claire read the words over his shoulder.
“No.””
A second sheet slipped from the fold.
It contained a location and a time.
*Midnight. The old Carter chapel. Come alone, or Sophie disappears forever.*
Daniel stared at the note.
The chapel had been abandoned for years. It stood on the far edge of the family property, beyond the gardens and the old cemetery.
His father had built it as a memorial to the family's dead.
Now Vanessa wanted him there alone.
Claire shook her head.
“It's a trap.””
“I know.””
“Then don't go.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
The little girl was watching him with wide, frightened eyes.
“She's going to hurt Sophie,” he said quietly.
Claire held Emily closer.
“Then we call the police.””
“We will. But if Vanessa thinks I'm coming alone, she'll lower her guard.””
Hale entered the room.
“I know the chapel. There's an underground passage leading to the old cemetery. Your father used it during renovations.””
Daniel turned.
“Can you show me?””
“Yes.””
Claire grabbed his hand.
“Daniel, please. I've already lost six months with our children. I won't lose you too.””
He pressed his forehead against hers.
“You won't.””
Then he looked at both girls.
“I promise you, this ends tonight.””
But as they left the facility, Daniel received one final message from Vanessa.
*Bring the original trust papers. If you bring the police, you'll find only one daughter when you arrive.*
And attached was a photograph of Ethan.
He was sitting in the back of a car.
His face was wet with tears.
His hands were tied.
May you like
The message beneath it contained just four words.
*Your son is mine now.*
