Chapter 1: The Man Who Came Home Early
“Go ahead, Vanessa. Try it again.””
Daniel Carter’s voice cut through the living room like a gunshot.
His wife stood frozen beside the fireplace, a leather strap dangling from her trembling fingers. Eight-year-old Ethan was pressed against the wall, one hand clutching his stinging shoulder. Beneath the coffee table, fifteen-month-old Sophie covered her mouth with both tiny hands, terrified that even a whimper might give away her hiding place.
Daniel had been gone for four days.
He had returned three hours earlier than expected.
And what he had just witnessed had changed everything he thought he knew about his family.
“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered, forcing a nervous laugh.
“You're home early. This isn't what it looks like.””
Daniel tightened his grip on the strap.
“Then explain what it looks like to me.””
Vanessa glanced at Ethan.
“Your son has been disobedient. I've been trying to discipline him, but he refuses to listen. He even refuses to tell me where that little girl is hiding.””
Ethan lifted his chin despite the tears gathering in his eyes.
“She's not doing anything wrong.””
“Quiet!”” Vanessa snapped.
She took a step toward him.
Daniel immediately moved between them.
“I said explain,” he repeated.
“I didn't say you could continue.””
Vanessa's lips parted, but no answer came.
Under the table, Sophie began to tremble harder.
She recognized the sound of Vanessa's heels. She knew the sharp click they made against the hardwood floor, the way they stopped abruptly before someone got hurt.
And she knew what happened when Vanessa discovered where she was hiding.
Only yesterday, Sophie had been playing with a stuffed rabbit near the kitchen when Vanessa had suddenly appeared in the doorway.
“Come here, sweetheart,” Vanessa had said sweetly.
Sophie had toddled toward her, reaching up with both arms.
But instead of lifting her, Vanessa had grabbed her wrist.
“Where did your brother put it?””
Sophie had stared at her, confused.
“Bubba?””
“Don't play stupid with me!””
The sudden shout had made Sophie fall backward onto the floor.
Vanessa crouched in front of her, her manicured nails digging into the toddler's arm.
“Where is the little box? The one your daddy keeps in his office?””
Sophie began to cry.
Vanessa's expression changed instantly when she heard footsteps approaching from the hallway.
She released the child, straightened her dress, and smiled at the housekeeper entering the kitchen.
“Poor thing,” Vanessa said.
“She's so clumsy.””
That night, Ethan had found Sophie sitting silently in her crib, her cheeks wet and her small fingers wrapped around her stuffed rabbit.
He had climbed onto the mattress beside her.
“What happened, Soph?””
She couldn't explain it in words.
Instead, she grabbed his shirt and buried her face against his chest.
Ethan noticed the red marks around her wrist.
His stomach tightened.
“Did Vanessa do this?””
Sophie whimpered at the name.
That was enough.
From that moment on, Ethan stopped leaving his sister alone with Vanessa.
He carried Sophie wherever he could. He fed her breakfast, played with her in the garden, and sat outside her bedroom whenever their father was away.
But Vanessa noticed.
And she didn't like it.
Now, standing in the living room, she pointed an accusing finger at Ethan.
“This is ridiculous, Daniel. He's been deliberately turning Sophie against me. Every time I try to get close to her, he snatches her away. He tells her not to listen to me.””
Ethan stared at her in disbelief.
“You told me not to tell Dad what happened in the kitchen.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“What are you talking about?””
“You know what I'm talking about.””
“Daniel, listen to him!”” Vanessa cried.
“He's making things up because he doesn't want anyone correcting his behavior.””
Daniel looked at his son.
“Ethan, come here.””
The boy hesitated.
“It's okay,” Daniel said gently.
“Come to me.””
Ethan took two careful steps forward, keeping his body angled toward the coffee table.
Daniel noticed.
He also noticed the red mark on his son's cheek, the way Ethan held his left shoulder, and the tiny movement beneath the table whenever Vanessa shifted her feet.
His gaze returned to his wife.
“How long has this been happening?””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Nothing has been happening. You're allowing an eight-year-old to manipulate you.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Then you won't mind if I ask the staff what they've seen.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Frightened.
She quickly set the strap on the nearest chair and smoothed her hair.
“Of course not. Ask anyone you like. They'll tell you I'm the only person in this house who actually keeps those children under control.””
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“That's not true.””
Vanessa spun toward him.
“What did you say?””
Daniel caught her wrist before she could take another step.
“Don't.””
The room fell silent.
Then came a tiny sound from beneath the coffee table.
A soft, broken whimper.
Daniel slowly turned his head.
“Sophie?””
Two little eyes appeared in the darkness beneath the tablecloth.
His daughter's face was pale, her cheeks wet, her stuffed rabbit squeezed so tightly against her chest that its ears were twisted.
“Daddy?””
The single word nearly broke him.
Daniel dropped to his knees.
“Sweetheart, come here.””
Sophie shook her head violently.
“No. No, Daddy.””
“It's me, baby. Daddy's home.””
She looked past him.
Vanessa had taken one step backward.
Sophie immediately scrambled deeper beneath the table.
“No, no, no!””
Daniel stopped moving.
He had seen his daughter cry when she was hungry. He had seen her fuss when she was tired and cling to him during thunderstorms.
He had never seen her look at another human being as though that person might destroy her.
Slowly, he looked up at his wife.
“What did you do to my daughter?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Before she could answer, Ethan stepped forward.
“Dad, there's something you need to know.””
Vanessa lunged toward him.
“Don't you dare!””
Daniel rose so quickly that she stumbled backward.
“Finish that sentence, son.””
Ethan swallowed.
Then he looked toward the coffee table, where Sophie was shaking beneath the wooden frame.
“She saw Vanessa take something from your office.””
Daniel went completely still.
“What did she see?””
Ethan glanced at Vanessa.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“She saw what happened to the woman who came here looking for it.””
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
Because there was only one woman he could think of.
And she had disappeared six months earlier.
May you like
His first wife.
Sophie's mother.
