Chapter 8: The Trap at the Carter Estate
Daniel drove toward the Carter estate with Claire beside him and Richard Hale following in a second vehicle.
Neither spoke for the first ten minutes.
Then Claire turned toward him.
“You shouldn't have to do this alone.””
Daniel kept his eyes on the road.
“You've been alone for six months. I'm not letting you face her again.””
Claire looked down at her hands.
“I thought if I stayed away, she'd lose interest.””
“She hurt our son.””
“I know.””
“She made Sophie terrified of her own shadow.””
“I know, Daniel.””
His voice broke.
“And I wasn't there.””
Claire reached across the center console and touched his hand.
“You're here now.””
He wanted to believe that was enough.
But as the estate's iron gates appeared through the rain, Daniel knew the truth was more complicated.
Vanessa had spent months manipulating everyone around her. She had access to the house, the children's routines, the staff, and the family records.
She knew how Daniel thought.
She knew what he feared.
And she knew exactly how to make him hesitate.
The gates stood open.
Daniel slowed.
“Something's wrong.””
Claire looked toward the guardhouse.
The security booth was empty, and the gate camera had been smashed.
“Call the police,” she said.
Daniel handed her his phone.
“Tell them we have a credible threat involving two children. Give them the address and ask them to come immediately.””
He parked outside the main entrance.
Before he could reach the door, it swung open.
Vanessa stood in the foyer wearing a cream-colored dress, her hair perfectly arranged. She held a cup of tea in one hand.
Behind her, Ethan sat on the staircase.
His wrists were tied loosely with a strip of fabric.
Sophie stood beside him, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
Daniel's entire body went rigid.
“Let them go.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Welcome home, darling.””
“Untie my son.””
“Of course.””
She set the cup down, walked to Ethan, and removed the fabric herself.
Then she crouched beside Sophie.
“See? Daddy's home. You don't need to be afraid anymore.””
Sophie immediately backed away.
“Bad lady.””
Vanessa's smile vanished.
“That's very rude, Sophie.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don't touch her.””
Vanessa straightened.
“You've become so dramatic.””
“You threatened my children.””
“I invited them home.””
“You tied Ethan up!””
“He was trying to leave.””
Ethan jumped off the staircase and ran to Daniel.
“Dad, she said she was taking Sophie away.””
Daniel wrapped one arm around him.
“It's okay.””
Claire entered the foyer behind him.
Vanessa froze.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Vanessa's teacup slipped from her fingers and shattered on the marble floor.
“Claire.””
Claire stood with her shoulders squared.
“Vanessa.””
The two women stared at each other.
Vanessa's expression slowly transformed from shock into fury.
“You should be dead.””
Claire didn't flinch.
“You tried to make that happen.””
“You destroyed my family!””
“No. Your family destroyed itself.””
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“You have no idea what I've sacrificed.””
“I know what you did to your mother.””
The laughter stopped.
Daniel looked at Claire.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
“Don't you dare talk about Rebecca.””
“Your mother wanted to tell the truth. Your father stopped her.””
“You don't know anything!””
“I know she died because she threatened to expose the baby-switching scheme.””
Vanessa lunged toward Claire.
Daniel moved between them.
“Enough!””
Vanessa stared at him.
“Move.””
“No.””
“She's lying to you!””
“Then prove it.””
Vanessa's hands shook.
She looked toward Ethan and Sophie.
“You see what she's doing? She's poisoning you against me. She always wanted this family to herself.””
Claire stepped forward.
“I wanted my children safe.””
“You wanted the inheritance!””
“I never cared about the inheritance.””
“Liar!””
Vanessa grabbed a framed photograph from the console table and hurled it against the wall.
The glass exploded across the floor.
Sophie screamed.
Ethan immediately pulled his sister behind him.
“Stop yelling at her!”” he shouted.
Vanessa stared at the boy.
Then she did something that made Daniel's blood turn to ice.
She walked to the staircase, picked up a small backpack, and removed a sealed envelope.
“Fine,” she said.
“Let's stop pretending.””
She threw the envelope at Daniel's feet.
Inside were photographs of Emily, hospital records, and a legal document bearing Daniel's father's signature.
The document named Emily as the intended beneficiary of a separate family trust.
Daniel looked up.
“Why do you have this?””
“Because your father promised my mother that Emily would be protected.””
Hale entered the house behind Claire.
“That's not what the document says.””
Vanessa spun toward him.
“Stay out of this, Richard.””
“No.””
Hale removed a second document from his case.
“The trust was established for both children. Your father altered the original agreement after learning about the switch.””
Daniel took the papers.
The legal language was dense, but one sentence stood out.
In the event that the children are separated or their identities concealed, the estate shall remain under independent trusteeship until their identities are confirmed and both children are located.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You knew this existed.””
“Of course I knew.””
“Then why did you switch them?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I wanted Emily to have the life she deserved!””
“And what about Sophie?””
Vanessa looked at the toddler.
For a moment, something like shame crossed her face.
Then it disappeared.
“Sophie was supposed to disappear.””
The room fell silent.
Daniel felt Ethan stiffen beside him.
Claire covered her mouth.
Vanessa seemed to realize what she had admitted.
She quickly added, “I meant she was supposed to be sent away. Somewhere safe. Somewhere nobody would find her.””
“You hid a child from her own mother,” Daniel said.
“I was protecting Emily!””
“You beat my son!””
“He wouldn't cooperate!””
“You terrorized a fifteen-month-old baby!””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“She wasn't supposed to be here!””
Daniel stared at her.
There was no confusion now.
No misunderstanding.
No excuse that could explain away what she'd done.
He reached into his pocket and removed his phone.
“The police are on their way.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You think they'll arrest me? You have no idea how many people I've paid.””
“Then you'll have plenty of time to explain that to them.””
Her eyes darted toward the front door.
Hale stepped in front of it.
“Don't.””
Vanessa backed away.
Then she reached into her dress pocket and pulled out a small silver key.
Claire gasped.
“Where did you get that?””
Vanessa held it up.
“The original records are in the old nursery.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What records?””
Vanessa smiled through her tears.
“The ones that prove which baby was supposed to die.””
Before anyone could move, she ran upstairs.
Daniel handed Ethan to Claire.
“Stay with the children.””
He raced after Vanessa.
At the top of the staircase, he found the nursery door open.
Inside, the room had been stripped of its furniture. The walls were bare except for a faded patch where a painting had once hung.
Vanessa stood beside a loose floorboard.
She held a thick envelope in one hand and a lighter in the other.
“Don't come closer,” she warned.
Daniel stopped.
“Put the lighter down.””
“You don't understand what these papers will do.””
“They'll prove what happened.””
“They'll destroy everything!””
“Only the lies.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, her voice sounded almost human.
“My mother died believing she had failed Emily. My father spent his life telling me the Carters stole everything from us. I thought if I could make things right, I could finally prove that I mattered.””
Daniel's voice softened, but only slightly.
“You could have told the truth.””
“And lose everything?””
“You already did.””
Vanessa looked at the envelope.
Then she looked at Daniel.
A terrible decision passed across her face.
She flicked the lighter.
The corner of the envelope caught fire.
Daniel lunged forward.
He seized the papers from her hand and stamped out the flames beneath his shoe.
Vanessa screamed and shoved him.
He stumbled against the wall.
She reached for the remaining documents, but Daniel caught her wrist.
“It's over.””
“No!”” she shrieked.
“You don't get to take everything from me!””
She twisted free and ran toward the stairs.
Daniel followed, but by the time he reached the foyer, Vanessa had disappeared through the kitchen door.
A car engine roared outside.
Claire stood in the doorway, holding Sophie.
“Daniel!””
He looked toward the driveway.
Vanessa's black SUV was speeding through the open gates.
On the floor lay a single sheet of paper she'd dropped.
Daniel picked it up.
It contained the name and address of a private medical facility.

Beneath it was a handwritten message.
*Emily is there. Ask them what they did to her.*
