Chapter 7: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Survive

The second blow against the cottage door shook dust from the ceiling.

Claire grabbed Daniel's arm.

“There's a back entrance through the kitchen,” she whispered.

“We need to leave. Now.””

Daniel didn't move.

“Who are those men?””

“I don't know.””

“Richard Hale said one of our daughters was never supposed to survive. What does that mean?””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, please. I'll explain everything, but we cannot stay here.””

A third blow struck the door.

The lock began to splinter.

Daniel shoved the photograph of Emily into his jacket pocket and reached for Claire's hand.

“Stay behind me.””

They rushed through the kitchen. Claire pulled a narrow door open, revealing a passage that led into the overgrown garden behind the cottage.

They had barely stepped outside when a voice called from the front of the house.

“Mr. Carter! Don't make this worse than it needs to be.””

Daniel recognized the voice from the phone.

Richard Hale.

“Then tell your men to stop trying to break into my wife's house!”” Daniel shouted.

Hale appeared at the doorway, his silver hair perfectly combed despite the rain.

He held up both hands.

“I came here to protect you.””

“By sending armed men?””

“They're security contractors.””

“One of them is carrying a metal case!””

Hale glanced toward the man standing beside the SUV.

“That case contains documents. Nothing more.””

Claire stepped out from behind Daniel.

“You're lying, Richard.””

For the first time, the attorney's composure faltered.

“Claire, you should have stayed hidden.””

“And let Vanessa keep the children?””

“I gave you an opportunity to walk away.””

“You gave me a choice between disappearing forever and watching my daughter die!””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Claire, what is he talking about?””

She struggled to answer.

Hale took advantage of the silence.

“Your wife has been telling you fragments of the truth. She hasn't told you what happened before Sophie was born, has she?””

Daniel looked at him coldly.

“I'm listening.””

Hale motioned toward the cottage.

“Then come inside. I'll explain everything.””

“No.””

“Daniel, this concerns your entire family.””

“My family is standing right here.””

Hale studied Claire for several seconds before nodding to the two men.

“Put the case down.””

One man obeyed.

The other kept his hand inside his jacket.

Daniel noticed.

“So much for protecting me.””

Hale sighed.

“Vanessa has become unpredictable. She was supposed to retrieve the original documents and leave the children alone. Instead, she's started hurting them.””

Daniel's fists clenched.

“You knew she was hurting Ethan?””

“I suspected it.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I was trying to prevent something far worse.””

Claire shook her head.

“That's what you said about Emily.””

The attorney's face went pale.

Daniel looked between them.

“Enough riddles. Tell me who Emily is.””

Hale opened the metal case.

Inside were several sealed envelopes, a stack of hospital records, and a small black notebook.

He removed one document.

“Your father had an affair with a woman named Margaret Vale nearly thirty years ago. She gave birth to a daughter, Rebecca. Your father paid for Rebecca's education and later helped her establish a family.””

Daniel stared at the papers.

“My father had another daughter?””

“Yes. He never acknowledged her publicly, but he never abandoned her either. Rebecca eventually married and gave birth to a little girl named Emily.””

“And Vanessa?””

“Vanessa is Rebecca's daughter.””

Daniel felt the world shift beneath his feet.

Vanessa was his half-niece.

Emily was his great-niece.

And Sophie?

Claire spoke before Hale could answer.

“Sophie was born first. Emily was born less than twenty minutes later, in the same hospital.””

Daniel looked at the photograph in his pocket.

“Why were they switched?””

Hale closed the case.

“Because your father changed his will shortly before his death. He intended to leave the bulk of his estate to Sophie, believing that doing so would protect Claire and the child he loved.””

“That doesn't explain the switch.””

“No. It explains why Vanessa wanted control of Sophie.””

Hale paused.

“Rebecca died shortly after Emily was born. Vanessa was young, frightened, and convinced that your father had stolen her family's future. She believed that if she could place Emily inside the Carter family, she could eventually claim the inheritance through her daughter.””

Daniel stared at him.

“She gave up her own baby?””

“She arranged for the babies to be exchanged. She believed that if Emily were raised as your daughter, the trust would eventually belong to her.””

Claire's voice trembled.

“But she didn't expect me to discover the truth.””

Hale nodded.

“Claire found the original records. She realized that the baby she had taken home wasn't the child she'd delivered. She confronted Vanessa.””

“And Vanessa tried to kill her,” Daniel said.

Hale looked away.

“I cannot prove that.””

“You knew she was in danger.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped her disappear.””

“I helped Claire escape after Vanessa's father arranged for someone to sabotage her car. The police believed she had died. We needed time to establish what had happened.””

Daniel's voice rose.

“Six months! You let me bury an empty coffin while my wife hid in fear!””

“I thought Vanessa would stop looking once Claire disappeared.””

“You thought wrong.””

Hale lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

For a moment, only the rain spoke.

Then Claire took Daniel's hand.

“There's something else.””

She looked at Hale.

“Tell him what happened to Rebecca.””

The attorney's expression changed.

“Not here.””

“Tell him.””

Hale closed his eyes.

“Rebecca didn't die from complications after childbirth. She was murdered.””

Daniel went cold.

“By whom?””

Hale looked directly at him.

“Vanessa's father arranged it. Rebecca had discovered the adoption scheme and threatened to expose everyone involved.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel felt sick.

“And Vanessa knows?””

“She knows her mother died under suspicious circumstances. She doesn't know all the details.””

“Then why did she switch the babies?””

“Because she wanted Emily to inherit the Carter fortune, but she also wanted Sophie out of the way. She believed the original documents could prove that Sophie was the rightful beneficiary.””

Daniel stared at Hale.

“Why would she need to hurt Sophie if she believed Sophie wasn't mine?””

“Because the trust was written to protect Claire's biological child. If Sophie died, the estate would pass to the next named beneficiary.””

“Who?””

Hale hesitated.

Then he opened the black notebook.

“Vanessa.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Before he could respond, his phone rang.

It was Mrs. Brooks.

“Daniel, you need to come home immediately,” she said, her voice shaking.

“A woman just arrived asking for Ethan and Sophie.””

“Who?””

“She said she's their aunt. She showed me identification and everything.””

Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.

“Did you let her inside?””

“No. But she left something on the porch.””

“What?””

Mrs. Brooks hesitated.

“A photograph of Ethan at school. Taken yesterday.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

Her face had gone white.

The caller continued.

“There's a note on the back. It says, 'Bring Emily home, or the boy is next.''”

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Hale shut the metal case.

Vanessa had found out where the children were.

And now she was no longer pretending that this was about money.

It was about revenge.
