Chapter 4: The DNA Report

Daniel stared at the document lying between his shoes.

For six months, he had believed grief was the worst thing a man could survive. He had buried his wife, raised two children while traveling for work, and trusted Vanessa to help rebuild a family that had been shattered.

Now his wife was standing in front of him, claiming his youngest child might not be his.

“Pick it up,” Vanessa said.

Daniel slowly bent down and retrieved the report.

“Tell me this is a lie.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Why would I lie about something so easily proven?””

“Because you've lied about everything else.””

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel examined the document. The laboratory name appeared legitimate, and the report carried a date from four months earlier. His name was listed as the alleged father. Sophie's name appeared beneath it.

He forced himself to read the conclusion.

The probability of paternity was listed as zero percent.

For a moment, the room seemed to lose all sound.

“No,” he whispered.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Your father knew. Claire knew. Everyone who mattered knew except you.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“My father died before Sophie was born. How could he possibly have known?””

“Because Claire told him.””

“When?””

“Before she disappeared.””

Daniel crushed the edge of the paper in his fist.

“Then explain something to me. If Sophie isn't my biological daughter, why did my father leave her the majority of his estate?””

Vanessa's expression flickered.

There it was.

Not grief. Not jealousy.

Greed.

“Your father made a mistake,” she said.

“He was old, sentimental, and easily manipulated by Claire.””

“My father was a brilliant man.””

“And he was dying!”” Vanessa snapped.

“He didn't know what was happening around him.””

Daniel took a step toward her.

“Careful.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Or what? You'll throw me out? Take away my credit cards?

Tell everyone your wife is a monster? Go ahead. But you should know that the trust documents give Sophie control of a fortune that should have belonged to you.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You married me for my family's money.””

“I married you because I thought you were smarter than this.””

The insult landed with surprising force.

Vanessa walked to the window and pulled back the curtains. Beyond the glass, the garden lay beneath a gray afternoon sky.

“Your father established that trust before he died,” she continued.

“Claire had access to the original documents. She discovered that Sophie had been named the primary beneficiary. She could have given the papers to the family attorney, but instead she hid them.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew the truth would destroy you.””

Daniel gripped the report.

“What truth?””

Vanessa turned.

“Ask your father.””

“He's dead!””

“Then ask the man who helped Claire disappear.””

Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.

The screen displayed the name of his older brother, Michael.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Michael, I need you to come to the house.””

“What's happened?””

“It's Claire.””

Silence.

Then Michael spoke in a voice Daniel had never heard before.

“What did you find?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The question was wrong.

Michael should have asked what he meant.

Instead, he'd asked what Daniel had found.

“Why aren't you surprised?”” Daniel demanded.

“Daniel, listen to me. Don't trust anything Vanessa tells you.””

“I'm looking at a DNA report saying Sophie isn't my daughter.””

Michael exhaled sharply.

“Where did you get that?””

“Vanessa gave it to me.””

“Then don't believe it until we've verified it.””

Daniel glanced at his wife.

She was watching him carefully.

“Did you know Claire was alive?””

Another silence.

Longer this time.

“Michael?””

His brother finally answered.

“I know where she went after she left the hospital.””

Daniel felt his heart slam against his ribs.

“You knew?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

“From the people who arranged her disappearance.””

Daniel looked toward the bookcase concealing the staircase.

“Are you telling me my wife was kidnapped?””

“I'm telling you that what happened to Claire wasn't an accident. And if Vanessa has shown you that report, she's desperate.””

“Why?””

“Because the original DNA test said something very different.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What did it say?””

Before Michael could answer, Vanessa snatched the phone from his hand.

“Michael,” she said sweetly.

“How nice to hear your voice.””

Daniel lunged for the phone, but she stepped away.

“I'm afraid your brother is having trouble understanding the situation,” Vanessa continued.

“Perhaps you should come over and explain it to him.””

She ended the call.

Daniel stared at her in disbelief.

“Give me my phone.””

Vanessa slipped it into her pocket.

“Not until you calm down.””

“You have ten seconds.””

For the first time, she seemed uncertain whether he was bluffing.

Then she slowly handed it back.

Daniel immediately dialed Michael again.

No answer.

He tried a second time.

Still nothing.

A message appeared on the screen.

*Unknown number: Your brother is not the person you should be worried about.*

Daniel read it twice.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Who sent this?””

She said nothing.

“Who?””

Vanessa backed toward the front door.

“You should stop asking questions, Daniel. You have two children to think about.””

“My children are exactly why I'm asking.””

Her expression hardened.

“Then perhaps you should consider what will happen if the truth comes out.””

She opened the door.

Before leaving, she turned one last time.

“You think you're saving Sophie. But if you knew who her biological father really was, you'd never look at her the same way again.””

The door slammed.

Daniel stood alone in the hallway, the false DNA report trembling in his hand.

Then he noticed something.

The laboratory seal was genuine, but the report number had been altered. A small digit had been overwritten, and the signature belonged to a doctor whose name Daniel recognized from the local news.

The doctor had lost his medical license for falsifying paternity tests.

Daniel immediately photographed the document and sent it to a private investigator he had hired years earlier to investigate a business fraud case.

He asked for one thing.

Verify everything.

Then he went to the neighbor's house to collect his children.

Ethan was sitting on the sofa with Sophie asleep against his chest. Mrs. Brooks had wrapped a blanket around both of them and placed a plate of untouched cookies on the coffee table.

When Daniel entered, Ethan jumped up.

“Dad! Is she coming back?””

“Not if I can help it.””

Ethan studied his father's face.

“Did you find Mommy?””

Daniel crouched beside him.

“I found proof that she might still be alive.””

Ethan's eyes filled with hope.

“Can we see her?””

“Soon, I hope.””

Sophie stirred, opened her eyes, and reached for Daniel.

“Daddy.””

He lifted her into his arms.

For several seconds, he held her without saying anything.

Then Ethan whispered, “Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Vanessa told me something else.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“What?””

Ethan looked down at his shoes.

“She said if Mommy ever came home, you'd have to choose between her and Sophie.””

Daniel felt cold spread through his chest.

“Why would she say that?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Because she said Mommy was the only person who knew where the real baby was buried.””

Daniel stopped moving.

Behind him, Mrs. Brooks slowly lowered the cup of tea she had been holding.

And from somewhere outside the house, a car engine started.
