Chapter 6: The Mother Who Never Stopped Looking

Vanessa didn't leave the hospital quietly.

She ordered the security guards to remove Daniel from the administrator's office, but Dr. Morris immediately demanded that they stand down.

“This is a private meeting,” she said.

“Neither of you has authority to interfere with my records.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“You've already interfered enough.””

Dr. Morris stood.

“And you've lied enough.””

The words hung in the air.

Daniel watched his wife carefully. Her face was pale, and her fingers were digging into the leather strap of her handbag.

He had seen her angry.

He had seen her cruel.

He had never seen her afraid of a hospital administrator.

“What happened to Emily?”” Daniel demanded.

Vanessa looked at him.

“I told you. She died.””

“Then why did you panic when I asked where she was?””

“Because you refuse to understand what you're hearing!””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Make me understand.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it again.

Dr. Morris reached for the folder.

“Mr. Carter, I need to explain what happened that night. But I can only do that if you agree to let the police handle the investigation.””

“Agreed.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You think the police will help you? Your father spent years trying to uncover this. Look where it got him.””

Daniel went still.

“What do you mean?””

She seemed to realize she had said too much.

“Nothing.””

“You just said my father spent years investigating this.””

Vanessa turned toward the door.

Daniel caught her arm.

“Don't walk away from me.””

She jerked free.

“Take your hands off me!””

The security guards moved between them.

Dr. Morris raised her voice.

“Enough! Both of you.””

Vanessa looked at the administrator with open hatred.

“If you tell him what happened, you'll destroy more than one family.””

Dr. Morris met her gaze.

“Perhaps some families deserve to be destroyed.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

Then she turned and stormed out.

Daniel waited until her footsteps disappeared.

“Tell me everything,” he said.

Dr. Morris sat down slowly.

“Six months ago, a woman came to this hospital asking to see Claire Carter's records. She said she was a relative. She had a scar near her left temple and was carrying a photograph of a newborn.””

Daniel's heart pounded.

“Claire.””

“I believe so. She asked whether the baby who left with you was the one Claire had delivered.””

“What did you tell her?””

“I told her the records had been changed. Someone had replaced the original birth certificate with a document naming Sophie as the child delivered by Claire.””

Daniel gripped the desk.

“Who changed it?””

“I don't know. The records were altered using an administrator's credentials. The administrator disappeared shortly afterward.””

“Did you see Claire again?””

Dr. Morris hesitated.

“Once.””

“When?””

“Three months ago. She came to the emergency department under another name. She had a broken rib and bruising around her neck.””

Daniel's stomach turned.

“Who hurt her?””

“She refused to say. She only asked whether the children were safe.””

“Did you tell her they were?””

“I told her I couldn't guarantee it.””

Daniel lowered his head.

For six months, he had mourned a woman who had been hiding in fear while he believed she was dead.

He had spent those months rebuilding his life with the very person who might have threatened her.

“Where did she go?””

Dr. Morris shook her head.

“She left before sunrise. But she gave me this.””

She handed him a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Claire holding a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

On the back, in Claire's handwriting, were six words.

Find Emily. Vanessa knows where she is.

Daniel stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

“Why didn't you call me?””

“Because I received a warning the following morning. Someone told me that if I contacted you, both children would be taken away.””

“Who threatened you?””

Dr. Morris looked toward the door.

“I believe it was Vanessa's father.””

Daniel slowly raised his head.

“Her father is dead.””

“Yes. But his attorney visited me last week.””

She slid a business card across the desk.

It belonged to a man named Richard Hale, a prominent attorney who had represented several members of Daniel's family.

Daniel knew the name.

Hale had handled the legal paperwork following his father's death. He had also prepared the trust documents that left most of the family fortune to Sophie.

“What does he have to do with this?””

Dr. Morris took a deep breath.

“Everything.””

She explained that the hospital had been involved in a private adoption program decades earlier. Some of the arrangements were legal. Others were not. Wealthy families had paid intermediaries to secure newborns, sometimes using falsified records to hide the children's origins.

Daniel felt sick.

“Are you saying Sophie was sold?””

“I can't prove that. But I can tell you that the original delivery record lists two babies born within minutes of each other. One was Claire's. The other belonged to a woman whose name was removed from the system.””

“Who was the other woman?””

Dr. Morris slid another document toward him.

The mother's name had been crossed out in black ink.

But beneath the ink, someone had written a surname.

*Vale.*

Daniel looked up.

“Vanessa's family.””

Dr. Morris nodded.

“That's why I believe the switch was arranged before the babies were discharged.””

Daniel remembered Vanessa's words.

Your father knew the truth about Sophie.

His father had not simply left Sophie an inheritance.

He had been trying to protect something.

Or someone.

Daniel stood.

“I need to find Claire.””

Dr. Morris handed him another piece of paper.

“Then start here.””

It contained an address in a neighboring town, along with a telephone number.

“Who lives there?””

“I don't know. Claire gave me the address and asked me to keep it safe.””

Daniel photographed the paper and left the hospital.

He drove straight to the address.

It belonged to a small, weather-beaten cottage behind a closed-down pharmacy. The garden was overgrown, and the windows were covered by faded curtains.

He knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

“Claire?””

A shadow moved behind the curtain.

Daniel stepped back.

“It's me. Daniel.””

The curtain shifted.

Then the front door opened a few inches.

A woman stood behind it, her face partially hidden by the dim hallway.

She looked thinner than he remembered.

Her dark hair had been cut short.

But the scar near her left temple was unmistakable.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

He couldn't move.

For six months, he had imagined a thousand different ways he might see his wife again.

He had never imagined standing outside a cottage while she looked at him as though he were the most dangerous man in the world.

“Claire,” he breathed.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You shouldn't have come.””

Daniel stepped toward her.

“I thought you were dead.””

“I know.””

“Why didn't you come home?””

Claire looked over her shoulder, as though someone might be listening.

“Because Vanessa told me she'd kill Sophie if I did.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“She hurt Ethan. She terrorized Sophie. She lied about you. She told me Sophie wasn't my daughter.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Did she show you the DNA report?””

“Yes.””

“It's fake.””

“I know.””

Claire opened the door wider.

For one brief moment, Daniel thought she would fall into his arms.

Instead, she grabbed his wrist and pulled him inside.

The cottage smelled of old wood and cold coffee. A small table stood beside the window, covered in newspaper clippings, photographs, and handwritten notes.

Daniel recognized his father's signature on one of the documents.

Claire locked the door.

“Where are the children?””

“Safe. With someone I trust.””

“Does Vanessa know where they are?””

“No.””

Claire released a shaky breath.

“Then we still have a chance.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Tell me what happened.””

Claire sat down, her hands trembling.

“The night Sophie was born, I heard a nurse arguing with someone outside my room. I couldn't see their faces, but I heard them discussing two babies. One of them said the paperwork had to be changed before morning.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried. Your father told me not to speak until he could verify what he'd found.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“My father knew?””

“He discovered that Vanessa's family had been paying someone at the hospital for years. When he confronted them, they threatened to expose a secret about your family's estate.””

“What secret?””

Claire looked directly at him.

“Your father had another child.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

“A daughter. Born before you. She was given up for adoption under an agreement arranged by Richard Hale.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My father never told me he had another child.””

“He was ashamed. He spent years trying to find her. When he finally discovered where she was, he learned that Vanessa's father had been involved in the adoption.””

Daniel felt a terrible suspicion forming.

“Was that child Emily?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“Emily was your half-sister's daughter.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

“Then Emily was my niece?””

“Yes.””

“And Sophie?””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Sophie was the baby I gave birth to. But she wasn't the baby who left the hospital with us.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then where is our daughter?””

Claire reached into her pocket and removed a small photograph.

It showed a little girl of about two years old standing beside a woman in a yellow coat.

The child had dark hair, wide brown eyes, and a crescent-shaped birthmark near her left shoulder.

Daniel recognized her immediately.

Not because she looked like Sophie.

Because she looked exactly like the baby in the original hospital photograph.

Claire pressed the photograph into his hand.

“Her name is Emily,” she whispered.

“And Vanessa has been raising her under another identity.””

Daniel's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

He answered without speaking.

A man's voice came through.

“Mr. Carter, if you're with Claire, get out of that house immediately.””

“Who is this?””

“Richard Hale.””

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“Where is Emily?””

“She's alive,” Hale replied.

“But Vanessa has just discovered that Claire is no longer hiding alone.””

A crash sounded from outside the cottage.

Claire jumped to her feet.

Daniel rushed to the window.

A black SUV had pulled up beside the garden.

Two men climbed out.

One carried a metal case.

The other held a photograph.

Daniel's phone crackled.

Hale spoke again.

“If you want both your daughters alive, you need to understand one thing.””

Daniel stared at the men approaching the front door.

“What?””

Hale's answer came in a whisper.

“Vanessa didn't switch the babies to steal your inheritance.””

May you like

The front door shuddered under a heavy blow.

“She switched them because one of those children was never supposed to survive.””
