Chapter 9: Meeting The Man Who Left Me
I spent the entire night deciding whether to meet Daniel Carter.
Part of me wanted answers.
Another part of me wanted to burn the address and pretend none of this existed.
But I had spent my whole life living with someone else’s version of the truth.
I needed my own.
The address led me to an old house outside the city.
It looked abandoned.
The paint was peeling.
The garden was overgrown.
I almost turned around.
Then the door opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Tired.
But something about his eyes felt familiar.
I hated that.
“You came.””
I stared at him.
“You’re Daniel.””
He nodded.
“I am.””
I didn’t move.
“You were supposed to be dead.””
Pain crossed his face.
“I know.””
“Who told me that?””
“My mistake.””
I laughed.
“Your mistake?””
He looked down.
“I made many.””
I walked inside.
The house smelled like old wood and dust.
There were photographs on the walls.
One stopped me.
A picture of a young man holding a baby.
Me.
My chest tightened.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel followed my eyes.
“I kept everything.””
“Why?””
“Because leaving you was the worst thing I ever did.””
I turned.
“Then why did you?””
He sat down.
“I was sick.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Not physically.””
He looked ashamed.
“I was involved with dangerous people.””
The same word Vanessa used.
Dangerous.
“I thought disappearing would protect you.””
“It didn’t.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“It destroyed you.””
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted the anger to be simple.
But seeing him there made everything harder.
“Why come back now?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because someone else found out the truth.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
“Your grandfather.””
I froze.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
“What does he want?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Control.””
I stood.
“This makes no sense.””
Daniel pulled out a file.
Inside were documents.
Records.
Names.
Connections.
Then I saw something.
Vanessa’s name.
Ethan’s name.
Sarah’s name.
My family was connected to Daniel’s past in ways I never imagined.
“Why was Vanessa involved?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she wasn’t investigating Sarah.””
“What?””
“She was investigating me.””
I felt confused.
“Why?””
“Because she knew I had a secret.””
“What secret?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
“The reason your parents adopted you.””
My hands went cold.
“Why?””
He slowly answered:
“Because you weren’t just a child they rescued.””
I waited.
Daniel looked at me.
“You were the heir to something.””
I almost laughed.
“This is insane.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“Then explain.””
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then he stood quickly.
“We need to leave.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because they found us.””
A car stopped outside.
The headlights filled the room.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“James, whatever happens, don’t let them take Emily.””
My blood froze.
“How do they know about Emily?””
The front door shook.
A voice called from outside.
“Daniel Carter.””
Daniel looked terrified.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Because they know she carries the same secret you do.””
