Chapter 10: The Secret Inside Our Family
I never believed my life could change in one night.
But standing inside that old house, hearing strangers outside searching for us, I realized the truth had been waiting for me all along.
Daniel pushed me toward the back door.
“Go.””
I stared at him.
“What about you?””
“I need to slow them down.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“James.””
Something in his voice stopped me.
For the first time, he wasn’t the stranger who abandoned me.
He was my father.
Even if he was years too late.
We escaped through the back entrance and drove for nearly an hour before stopping.
I called Vanessa immediately.
She answered after one ring.
“James?””
“Where’s Emily?””
“At Rachel’s.””
“Get her out.””
Silence.
“What happened?””
I looked at Daniel.
“He knows about her.””
Vanessa went quiet.
Then she whispered:
“No.””
“What?””
“Not him.””
Her voice shook.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Finally, she said:
“Your grandfather.””
I closed my eyes.
“What does he want with Emily?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Emily is the only person who can reveal what happened twenty years ago.””
I felt anger rising.
“You knew.””
“I knew part of it.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“James, listen to me.””
Her voice was desperate.
“If your grandfather finds Emily, he won’t just hurt her.””
My grip tightened.
“What are you saying?””
“He will use her to destroy everyone connected to him.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened twenty years ago?””
Daniel’s face became serious.
He had been hiding something too.
“James…”
I turned.
“Tell me.””
He looked away.
“Your grandfather was involved in an illegal adoption network.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
“He didn’t rescue children.””
My stomach turned.
“He bought them.””
I felt sick.
“And me?””
Daniel looked at me.
“You were the child he couldn’t control.””
Everything suddenly connected.
The secrets.
The lies.
The fear.
Sarah’s investigation.
Vanessa’s obsession with protecting Emily.
“You all knew.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Sarah discovered it.””
“And she died because of it.””
Silence.
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
I drove back toward Rachel’s house.
But before I arrived, I received a message.
A picture.
Emily.
Standing outside Rachel’s house.
With someone behind her.
My heart stopped.
The message contained only one sentence.
“Come alone if you want your daughter back.””
I showed Daniel.
His face turned white.
“Who is it?””
I zoomed in on the photo.
The man standing behind Emily was older.
Gray hair.
Cold expression.
But I knew that face.
Because I had seen it before.
In my childhood photos.
The man who everyone told me was gone.
My grandfather.
And beneath the picture was another message.
“Bring the truth you’ve been hiding, James.””
I stared at the screen.
Because I finally understood.
This was never about Vanessa.
It was never about Ethan.
It was never even about Daniel.
Someone had been controlling every secret in my family for decades.

And now they wanted Emily.
And I was the only person standing between them and my daughter.
