Chapter 13: Vanessa’s Final Secret

Nobody moved.

The woman I had loved.

The woman who raised my daughter.

The woman who betrayed me.

Was standing in front of me holding a weapon.

Emily’s words came back to me.

Dad, please don’t let her take me away.

For a moment, I thought I had been wrong about everything.

Maybe Vanessa had never changed.

Maybe all the lies had a reason.

Maybe she was exactly who Richard said she was.

“Vanessa,” I said carefully.

“Put the gun down.””

Her hands were shaking.

“I didn’t want it to happen like this.””

Richard smiled.

“Of course not.””

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

He nodded.

“Eventually, everyone chooses survival.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

“What are you doing?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Protecting Emily.””

“By doing this?””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Richard.

“He has Emily.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“She was never at Rachel’s.””

Vanessa lowered the gun slightly.

“I had to follow his instructions.””

I stared.

“You helped him?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I was trying to get close enough to save her.””

I didn’t know what to believe.

Not anymore.

Vanessa looked at me.

“James, I need you to trust me one more time.””

I almost laughed.

“One more time?””

“I know what I did.””

“Yes.””

“I know I lied.””

“Yes.””

“But I never stopped loving Emily.””

That was the part I believed.

Because a person could make terrible choices and still love someone.

It didn’t erase the damage.

But it explained the fight.

Richard stepped forward.

“You’re wasting time.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You promised she would be safe.””

Richard smiled.

“I promised nothing.””

Her face changed.

And I saw it.

She had finally realized the truth.

Richard had never cared about anyone.

Not even his own daughter.

“You used me,” Vanessa whispered.

Richard shrugged.

“You were useful.””

The anger in Vanessa’s eyes changed.

Fear became determination.

She lowered the gun.

Then she threw it toward me.

“James.””

I caught it.

Richard immediately moved.

Daniel tackled him before he reached me.

The two men crashed into the floor.

“Go!”” Vanessa shouted.

“Find Emily!””

For the first time in years, Vanessa and I were fighting on the same side.

We ran upstairs.

Every door was locked.

Then we heard something.

A voice.

“Dad?””

I froze.

“Emily!””

We found her in an old bedroom.

She was scared but unharmed.

I rushed to her.

“Are you okay?””

She hugged me.

“I knew you’d come.””

I held her tightly.

Behind us, Vanessa entered.

Emily looked at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Emily whispered:

“Did you really lie to Dad?””

Vanessa broke.

“Yes.””

Emily looked down.

“But did you love me?””

Vanessa cried.

“More than anything.””

Emily slowly stepped forward.

And hugged her.

I looked away.

Because some moments were too painful to watch.

When we returned downstairs, Richard was gone.

Only Daniel remained.

“He escaped.””

I looked around.

“Where’s Vanessa?””

Daniel pointed outside.

“She followed him.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she knows where he’s going.””

I checked my phone.

A message appeared.

From Vanessa.

Only three words.

“Protect our daughter.””

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

Vanessa standing in front of Richard.

May you like

And beneath it:

“If you want Emily’s mother back, come to the place where Sarah died.””
