Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew My Wife

The photo stayed on my phone for hours.

I couldn’t stop looking at it.

Vanessa standing beside Sarah.

Two women who were supposed to have no connection before I met Vanessa.

But they did.

And someone wanted me to know.

I left the house with Emily and took her to my sister’s place.

I didn’t tell Vanessa where we were going.

For the first time in years, I was afraid of my own home.

At my sister Rachel’s house, Emily sat on the couch while holding a cup of hot chocolate.

Rachel looked at me.

“What happened?””

I showed her the photo.

Her expression changed.

“James…”

“You know something?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Rachel.””

She sighed.

“Sarah told me she was scared before she died.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she asked me not to.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked toward Emily.

“Because she thought you wouldn’t believe her.””

I felt anger rising.

“Believe what?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“She thought someone close to you was trying to take Emily away.””

I looked at my daughter.

The world suddenly felt different.

That afternoon, I met the woman who called me.

Her name was Claire Morgan.

She waited at a small coffee shop across town.

When she saw me, she looked nervous.

“You came.””

“You said Vanessa got rid of you.””

Claire looked down.

“She tried.””

“Who are you?””

Claire pulled a folder from her bag.

“I used to work with Sarah.””

She opened it.

Inside were documents.

“Sarah discovered Vanessa had been lying about her identity.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked at me.

“Vanessa Carter wasn’t always Vanessa Carter.””

My hands tightened.

“What are you saying?””

“She changed her name years ago.””

The room felt silent.

“Why?””

Claire pushed a document toward me.

“Because she was running from something.””

I looked at the papers.

A different name.

A different life.

But the same face.

Then Claire said something that made my blood freeze.

“James, your wife didn’t enter your life by accident.””

“What?””

“She knew Sarah before she met you.””

I stood up.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire shook her head.

“Sarah found out too late.””

I looked at the documents again.

There were dates.

Emails.

Records.

Everything connected.

Vanessa had been watching my family long before our wedding.

When I returned to Rachel’s house, Emily was waiting.

“Dad?””

I forced a smile.

“Yes?””

She held something in her hand.

“I found this in Vanessa’s room before we left.””

My heart dropped.

A small envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a note.

Only four words.

“You were never the father.””

I looked at Emily.

Then at the handwriting.

And suddenly, I remembered something.

A conversation Vanessa had years ago.

A question she asked me before we married.

A question I thought was strange.

“James, would you still love a child who wasn’t yours?””

At the time, I laughed.

I thought it was just a random question.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

My phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“James, where is Emily?””

I didn’t respond.

She continued:

“You need to bring her back.””

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Because if she finds out the truth, she’ll hate both of us.””

My grip tightened.

“What truth?””

Vanessa started crying.

And then she said:

May you like

“The truth about who Emily’s real father is.””

The call ended.
