Chapter 7: The Woman From Sarah’s Past

I stared at the message for nearly a minute.

Sarah’s mother had not contacted me in seven years.

Not once.

After Sarah’s funeral, she disappeared from our lives.

I always assumed she blamed me.

Maybe she did.

Maybe she knew something I didn’t.

I called the number.

She answered immediately.

“James?””

Her voice was older.

Tired.

But familiar.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

There was a long pause.

“I didn’t think I would ever speak to you again.””

“Why did you message me?””

She sighed.

“Because you finally know part of the truth.””

I looked at Emily through the window.

“What other truth is there?””

Her voice became quiet.

“The truth Sarah was trying to protect you from.””

The next morning, I met her at a small restaurant near the old neighborhood where Sarah grew up.

When I saw her, I almost didn’t recognize her.

She looked smaller.

Older.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes Sarah had.

“James.””

“Mrs. Bennett.””

She hugged me unexpectedly.

And for a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she sat down.

“I owe you an apology.””

“For what?””

“For believing Sarah could handle everything alone.””

I frowned.

“What happened?””

She looked at the table.

“Before Sarah died, she found out Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding something.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

She looked directly at me.

“You.””

I froze.

“Me?””

“Sarah discovered something about your past.””

I felt confused.

“My past?””

She nodded.

“Something you didn’t know.””

She placed a folder on the table.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

My name was written on them.

“What is this?””

“Your adoption records.””

I stared.

“I’m not adopted.””

She looked sad.

“You were never told.””

The world seemed to slow down.

“What are you saying?””

“Your parents raised you. But they weren’t your biological parents.””

I leaned back.

“No.””

“James…”

“No.””

I pushed the folder away.

“That’s impossible.””

Mrs. Bennett’s expression softened.

“Sarah found out after she started investigating Vanessa.””

“Why would she investigate Vanessa?””

“Because Sarah didn’t trust her.””

I looked at the papers again.

“My parents lied to me?””

“Not exactly.””

“Then what?””

Mrs. Bennett hesitated.

“Your biological father was someone connected to Sarah’s family.””

I felt dizzy.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Your father was Sarah’s uncle.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

“It’s complicated.””

“Complicated?””

I laughed bitterly.

“My wife hid my daughter’s father. Now you’re telling me my entire identity was hidden too?””

Mrs. Bennett reached across the table.

“Sarah wanted to tell you.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked away.

“Of what would happen if you learned everything at once.””

I picked up the documents.

My hands were shaking.

There was a birth certificate.

A different name.

A different family.

A life I never knew existed.

When I returned home, Emily ran toward me.

“Dad!””

I hugged her tightly.

But my mind was somewhere else.

That night, I searched through every box Sarah left behind.

I found photographs.

Letters.

Records.

Then I found a journal.

The first page had Sarah’s handwriting.

James,

If you are reading this, then everything I feared happened.

I turned the page.

The next sentence made me stop.

Because Sarah had written my name.

May you like

And underneath it:

The man who raised you was not your father. But the man who abandoned you is still alive.
