Chapter 11: The Man Behind Every Secret

I drove faster than I ever had before.

Every second felt like an hour.

Emily was out there with a man I had never met, a man who had been hiding behind my family’s pain for decades.

Daniel sat beside me, staring at the road.

“He won’t hurt her.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t know that.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You’re right. I don’t.””

For once, he wasn’t pretending.

He wasn’t acting like he had all the answers.

He was afraid.

And that made me realize something.

Everyone had been afraid of this man.

Sarah.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

Even Ethan.

They weren’t hiding secrets because they wanted power.

They were hiding because someone had made them believe the truth was dangerous.

When we reached the location from the message, I saw Rachel’s house in the distance.

The lights were off.

Too quiet.

I grabbed the door handle.

Daniel stopped me.

“James.””

“What?””

“You need to be careful.””

I looked at him.

“Careful?””

“He wants you angry. He wants you emotional.””

“He has my daughter.””

“I know.””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“But if you walk in there without thinking, he wins.””

I took a deep breath.

Then I walked inside.

The house was empty.

No Rachel.

No Emily.

No grandfather.

Only a note on the table.

Come to the old Bennett property.

Come alone.

I crushed the paper in my hand.

“He’s playing with me.””

Daniel picked up the note.

“No.””

He looked worried.

“He’s recreating the past.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at the handwriting.

“Your grandfather always liked control. He doesn’t just want people to obey him.””

“Then what does he want?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He wants people to understand that he owns their lives.””

An hour later, we arrived at the abandoned Bennett property.

The old house stood exactly where Sarah had grown up.

The place where she discovered secrets.

The place where everything began.

The front door opened before we knocked.

An elderly man stood there.

My grandfather.

Richard Carter.

He looked exactly like the man from the photograph.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he had been waiting for this moment forever.

“James.””

Hearing my name from his mouth made my skin crawl.

“You know who I am.””

He smiled.

“Of course.””

“Where is Emily?””

He ignored the question.

“You look like your father.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is my daughter?””

Richard sighed.

“Still emotional. Just like Daniel.””

Daniel moved beside me.

“Leave him out of this.””

Richard smiled.

“Still protecting him?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You destroyed enough lives.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Destroyed?””

He looked at me.

“I created them.””

I felt anger rising.

“You stole children.””

His smile disappeared.

“Careful.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You don’t get to threaten me.””

Richard studied me.

“You really are Sarah’s son.””

I froze.

“What?””

He smiled slightly.

“She never told you.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Sarah’s son?””

Richard nodded.

“She wasn’t just investigating me.””

I felt confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard walked toward an old table.

“She was my daughter.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Sarah was my daughter.””

I looked at Daniel.

Neither of us spoke.

Richard continued.

“She discovered what I was doing. She thought exposing me would destroy everything.””

“You killed her.””

His expression hardened.

“I didn’t.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to learn the truth.””

He opened a drawer.

Inside was a stack of documents.

“The night Sarah died, she wasn’t trying to escape from me.””

I looked at the papers.

“She was trying to protect you.””

“From you?””

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“From the people who wanted my empire.””

I felt confused.

“What empire?””

He placed a document in front of me.

A list of names.

People.

Families.

Officials.

Then I saw something.

A name I recognized.

Vanessa.

My breathing stopped.

“She was involved.””

Richard nodded.

“She was never just an innocent woman.””

I looked at him.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

He placed another document down.

A photograph.

Vanessa.

Years younger.

Standing beside Sarah.

But this time, there was someone else.

Someone I recognized.

Ethan.

Richard leaned closer.

“Your wife and Ethan didn’t enter your life by accident.””

My hands shook.

“Why?””

Richard smiled.

“Because they were both looking for the same thing.””

“What?””

May you like

He pointed at the document.

“You.””
