Chapter 9: The Letter That Changed Everything

I knew the handwriting immediately.

Daniel’s.

The moment Michael showed me the letter, I felt something inside me collapse.

Not because I believed it.

Because I was terrified of what my son would think.

“Where did you find this?”” I asked.

He held the old envelope.

“In the storage box with my childhood stuff.””

My hands felt cold.

“Why were you looking through that?””

“I was looking for my old graduation photos.””

I nodded slowly.

Then I looked at the letter.

“Did you read it?””

Michael hesitated.

“Part of it.””

My heart tightened.

“What did it say?””

He handed it to me.

I didn’t want to open it.

But I had spent years living with unanswered questions.

I unfolded the paper.

The first lines were exactly what Michael said.

*Dear Michael,*

*If you are reading this, your mother has probably already told you her version of what happened.*

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

Daniel was still doing it.

Even years later.

Still controlling the story.

I kept reading.

*Your mother always wanted to believe she was the only one who sacrificed for you.*

My jaw tightened.

Michael watched me.

“Mom?””

I kept going.

*The truth is, I made difficult choices because I wanted you to have a better future.*

I laughed quietly.

A better future.

That phrase had followed Daniel everywhere.

Every selfish decision became “for the future.””

Every hurt became “necessary.””

Then I reached the next paragraph.

And froze.

*There was a reason I fought for more control after the divorce. It wasn’t because I wanted to hurt Maria. It was because I knew something about her that she never told you.*

I stopped reading.

Michael leaned closer.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

My hands shook as I continued.

*Before Michael was born, Maria made a decision that changed everything.*

I frowned.

What decision?

I read faster.

*She chose to keep a secret from me.*

The room became silent.

Michael looked confused.

“What secret?””

“I don’t know.””

The next page was missing.

I turned the letter over.

Nothing.

Someone had removed the rest.

Michael stood.

“Dad did this.””

“Maybe.””

“No.””

His voice was certain.

“He wanted us to find this.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted us scared.””

That was exactly what bothered me.

Daniel had always been careful.

He didn’t explode.

He didn’t attack directly.

He planted doubts.

He waited.

He let people destroy themselves.

That evening, Evelyn reviewed the letter.

After reading it, she looked serious.

“Maria, do you know what he could be referring to?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Anything from before Michael was born?””

I thought.

Nothing.

Daniel and I had been young.

Happy.

Or at least I thought we were.

Then a memory surfaced.

Something I hadn’t thought about in twenty years.

The hospital.

The day Michael was born.

The conversation between Daniel and the doctor.

I had been too exhausted to understand.

But now…

A strange fear settled over me.

“What?”” Michael asked.

I looked at him.

“There might be something from when you were born.””

His expression changed.

“What kind of something?””

“I don’t know.””

The next morning, we went to the hospital where Michael was born.

The records department searched through old files.

After an hour, a woman returned carrying a folder.

“Maria Carter?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Michael.

“You requested birth records?””

“Yes.””

She hesitated.

“There’s an additional document attached.””

My heart raced.

“What document?””

She handed it to me.

I looked down.

It was a medical form.

A test result.

But the name at the top wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t Michael’s.

It was another person.

And when I saw the name, I realized why Daniel had been trying to control the story for all these years.

May you like

Because the secret wasn’t about me.

It was about Michael’s true identity.
