Chapter 5: The Plan They Thought I’d Never Find
I didn’t touch the flash drive.
Not immediately.
I just stared at it sitting between us.
A tiny piece of plastic.
Something that looked harmless.
But I had learned something about secrets.
The biggest ones were often hidden inside ordinary things.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“It means Chloe had a plan.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“A plan for what?””
He looked ashamed.
“For Michael.””
I pushed the flash drive back toward him.
“No.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“No?””
“I don’t want information from someone who helped create the problem.””
His expression changed.
“Maria, I’m trying to fix this.””
“Are you?””
I pointed at the drive.
“Or are you trying to save yourself?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
Maybe he really did regret what happened.
But regret after being caught was different from doing the right thing before causing damage.
Still, I took the flash drive.
Not for Daniel.
For my son.
That evening, Michael and I sat in front of the computer.
Neither of us spoke as the files loaded.
There were folders.
Emails.
Screenshots.
Documents.
Then one folder caught my attention.
*Future Plans.*
Michael looked at me.
“Open it.””
I clicked.
The first file was a conversation between Chloe and Daniel.
My hands went cold.
The messages were from six months earlier.
*Chloe:* “He’s old enough now. He doesn’t need Maria influencing every decision.””
*Daniel:* “He loves his mother.””
*Chloe:* “That’s because she made herself the hero.””
I stopped reading.
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“Keep going.””
I opened the next message.
*Chloe:* “Once he starts college, we can convince him that Maria is holding him back.””
My breathing stopped.
“She wanted to turn you against me.””
Michael looked devastated.
“I can’t believe this.””
The next message appeared.
*Daniel:* “I don’t want to hurt Maria.””
*Chloe:* “Then stop protecting her.””
I closed my eyes.
Protecting me.
That was how she saw it.
Not as a person.
Not as Michael’s mother.
As an obstacle.
But the next file was worse.
It was a document.
A draft.
A letter.
I opened it.
And read the title.
*Mother-Son Contact Reduction Proposal.*
My hands began shaking.
“What is that?””
Michael leaned closer.
I scrolled.
The document suggested limiting my involvement after Michael started college.
The reason?
“Emotional dependency.””
I laughed quietly.
But there was no humor in it.
“They wanted to punish me for being close to my own son.””
Michael looked furious.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“No?””
“They wanted to punish you because they knew they couldn’t replace you.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because my biggest fear had never been losing an argument with Daniel.
It had been losing my son.
And now I realized Michael had never been lost.
A knock came at the door.
Both of us froze.
It was almost midnight.
Nobody visited us that late.
Michael stood.
“I’ll check.””
“No,” I said.
But he was already walking.
He opened the door.
And his expression changed.
“Mom.””
I stood up.
“What is it?””
Michael stepped aside.
Standing outside was Chloe.
Alone.
No makeup.
No expensive dress.
No confident smile.
Just a woman who looked like she had finally realized she couldn’t control the story anymore.
“I need to talk to you,” she said.
I didn’t invite her in.
“Why?””
She looked at Michael.
Then back at me.
“Because Daniel didn’t tell you everything.””
Michael immediately stepped forward.
“We have enough proof.””
Chloe shook her head.
“No, you don’t.””
The confidence in her voice returned slightly.
And that scared me.
“What are you talking about?”” I asked.
She reached into her purse.
Then handed me a folder.
“I’m showing you this because I know what Daniel is planning next.””
I didn’t move.
“What is inside?””
Chloe looked at Michael.
Then whispered:
“The reason your father was so desperate to make you look like the problem.””
I opened the folder.
May you like
And the first page had a name on it.
Mine.
