Chapter 7: The Witness Daniel Never Expected

The person standing beside Daniel in the photograph was someone I never expected to see.

My former lawyer.

Richard Hale.

The man who handled my divorce twelve years ago.

The man who looked me in the eyes and told me, “Maria, everything has been finalized. You should focus on rebuilding your life.””

The same man who helped Daniel walk away with everything he wanted.

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

Michael noticed my expression.

“Mom, who is that?””

I handed him the picture.

“That’s Richard. He was the attorney who handled the divorce.””

Michael studied the image.

“And he knows Dad?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because suddenly, memories I had buried began rising.

The rushed meetings.

The paperwork I never received copies of.

The strange way Richard always defended Daniel’s explanations.

At the time, I thought he was just being professional.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

Our attorney, Evelyn Brooks, looked carefully at the photograph.

“You recognize this man?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She placed the picture on her desk.

“Then we need to understand why he was meeting with your ex-husband.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Can we find out?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“We can try.””

That afternoon, we started digging.

Not through rumors.

Not through assumptions.

Through records.

Facts.

The truth.

And the truth had a way of leaving fingerprints.

Three days later, Evelyn called us.

“Maria, I found something.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?””

“Richard Hale withdrew from your divorce case officially two weeks before the final agreement was signed.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because he was there.””

Evelyn paused.

“Exactly.””

I felt a chill.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying the man who represented you may not have legally represented you at the time those documents were filed.””

Michael looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn folded her hands.

“It means someone may have been making decisions in your name without proper authority.””

The room became silent.

I remembered that period of my life.

I was exhausted.

Working full-time.

Raising Michael.

Trying to survive a divorce I never wanted.

Daniel knew that.

He knew I trusted people.

He knew I was too tired to question every document.

And someone had taken advantage of that.

That evening, I received a phone call.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Maria Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Richard Hale.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?””

There was a pause.

“I think you deserve to know what happened.””

I stood up.

“Where were you when I needed to know?””

Silence.

Then he said something unexpected.

“I was afraid.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Afraid of Daniel?””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised me.

“He threatened me.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“He knew things about my personal life. Things that could have destroyed my career.””

I looked at Michael.

He was watching me carefully.

Richard continued.

“I should have spoken years ago.””

“Why now?””

Another pause.

“Because I saw what happened at the graduation.””

I closed my eyes.

“So this is about guilt?””

“No.””

His voice became serious.

“It’s about preventing Daniel from doing something worse.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What worse?””

Richard lowered his voice.

“He has been preparing for this for months.””

“Preparing for what?””

“He plans to use Michael.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Explain.””

“I can’t over the phone.””

“Then meet me.””

There was a long silence.

Then Richard agreed.

The next day, I met him in a small restaurant across town.

He looked nothing like the confident attorney I remembered.

He looked older.

Tired.

Broken.

“I’m sorry,” he said before sitting down.

I didn’t respond.

He opened his briefcase and removed a folder.

“I kept copies.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Copies of what?””

“The original documents.””

My breath caught.

“The divorce documents?””

He nodded.

“The ones Daniel changed.””

I stared at him.

“Why did you keep them?””

“Because I knew one day you would need the truth.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was the original custody agreement.

The real one.

My signature.

Daniel’s signature.

Everything.

Everything except one thing.

The custody terms were completely different.

I had never given up my rights.

Daniel had rewritten my life.

But before I could speak, Richard placed another document on the table.

“This is the part you don’t know.””

I looked at the page.

“What is it?””

Richard’s face turned pale.

“It proves Daniel didn’t start this plan after the divorce.””

He pointed to the date.

“This started before you separated.””

May you like

My heart sank.

Because the date on the document was from a time when I still believed my marriage was safe.
