Chapter 6: The Enemy Who Brought the Evidence

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not after seeing my name on those papers.

Not after realizing the battle I thought was about a stolen seat had been something much bigger.

Michael sat across from me at the kitchen table.

The folder remained between us.

Neither of us wanted to open it.

Because sometimes, knowing the truth is easier than reading it.

Finally, Michael reached for it.

“We need to know.””

I nodded.

“Okay.””

He opened the folder.

The first document was a financial record.

Then another.

Then another.

I scanned the pages.

“What am I looking at?””

Michael read silently.

Then his face changed.

“Mom…”

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Dad wasn’t trying to reduce your custody because he thought you were a bad mother.””

“Then why?””

Michael flipped the page.

“He was trying to hide money.””

I stared.

“What?””

The documents showed transfers made years ago.

Accounts opened without my knowledge.

Payments that didn’t match what Daniel reported during our divorce.

My entire body went still.

“He lied about his finances?””

Michael nodded slowly.

“He wasn’t trying to protect me.””

He looked angry.

“He was protecting himself.””

The next morning, I called Chloe.

I hated admitting it.

But she had brought me something important.

We met at a quiet park.

For the first time since I met her, she didn’t look like she was trying to win.

She looked tired.

“I know you hate me,” she said.

I looked at her.

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.””

That surprised her.

“But I know what you did.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I was wrong.””

I waited.

An apology from Chloe was something I never expected.

“I thought Daniel was the victim.””

“Why?””

“Because that’s what he told me.””

She looked away.

“He said you controlled everything. That you used Michael to punish him.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“He made me sound like the villain.””

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“And I believed him.””

A long silence passed.

Then I asked the question I had been holding.

“When did you realize?””

Chloe looked down.

“The graduation.””

I frowned.

“The graduation?””

“Yes.””

She took a breath.

“When Michael stood there and defended you, I realized something.””

“What?””

“He wasn’t afraid of losing his father.””

She looked at me.

“He was afraid of losing his mother’s trust.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because they were true.

Michael had not fought because I asked him to.

He fought because he knew someone was trying to erase me.

Chloe continued.

“Daniel doesn’t know I gave you those documents.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“Because I found out he had another plan.””

My stomach tightened.

“What plan?””

She looked at me.

“He wanted to make Michael choose.””

“Choose what?””

She whispered:

“Choose between his parents.””

I felt sick.

After everything.

After years.

Daniel still wanted control.

That afternoon, Michael and I met with an attorney.

Not because we wanted revenge.

Because we wanted protection.

When we arrived, the receptionist handed me an envelope.

“Someone dropped this off for you.””

I froze.

“Who?””

She looked at the note attached.

“It doesn’t say.””

I opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

A picture of Daniel.

A picture of Chloe.

And another person I recognized.

Someone who had no reason to be involved.

On the back of the photo were six words.

*Your ex-husband has been lying since the beginning.*

Michael looked over my shoulder.

“Mom…”

I turned the photo around.

May you like

And when I saw who was standing beside Daniel, I realized the truth was far bigger than our family.

Because the person in the picture was the one person who could destroy everything Daniel had built.
