Chapter 17: The Signature I Never Gave

The document looked familiar.

Too familiar.

A legal agreement.

A signature.

My name.

But something was wrong.

I zoomed in on the image.

My stomach turned.

“That’s not my signature.””

Michael looked over my shoulder.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

There was no doubt.

I knew my own handwriting.

I had signed thousands of papers in my life.

This wasn’t mine.

Daniel had sent me proof of his own crime.

But why?

The next morning, I met him.

Not alone.

Evelyn came with me.

Daniel looked nervous when we entered the office.

“You brought your lawyer?””

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“I expected that.””

I placed my phone on the table.

“Why did you send me this?””

Daniel looked at the document.

“Because I wanted you to understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That I wasn’t the only person who lied.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

He leaned back.

“Ask Thomas.””

The room went quiet.

Evelyn immediately noticed.

“What are you implying?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Maybe you should ask him what happened before Michael was born.””

I felt anger rise.

“Are you trying to destroy him too?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m trying to show you that everyone has secrets.””

I stood.

“Not everyone uses secrets to control people.””

He looked away.

For a moment, he looked defeated.

Then he said:

“I never wanted to lose him.””

I answered quietly.

“You lost him when you stopped trusting him with the truth.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

Before we left, he said:

“Maria.””

I stopped.

“I know you think I’m the villain.””

I looked back.

“But one day, you’ll understand why I did what I did.””

I almost laughed.

“No, Daniel.””

I opened the door.

“One day you’ll understand why we stopped letting you decide what was best for us.””

Outside, Evelyn was quiet.

“What do you think he meant about Thomas?””

“I don’t know.””

And that scared me.

Because Daniel had lied many times.

But sometimes, the most dangerous lies contained pieces of truth.

We met Thomas that evening.

When I showed him the document, his expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You’ve seen this.””

Thomas looked down.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because Daniel showed it to me.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Why?””

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Because he wanted me to believe your mother had made choices that affected you.””

I stared.

“What choices?””

Thomas sighed.

“There’s something I never told you.””

I felt exhausted.

“Another secret?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Michael looked hurt.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””

Thomas looked away.

“But everyone kept secrets from me.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Thomas said:

“When Michael was born, the hospital made an error.””

My heart stopped.

“What error?””

“They recorded the wrong information temporarily.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Thomas took a breath.

“Daniel found out before anyone corrected it.””

Michael’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

Thomas looked at him.

“I’m saying Daniel didn’t just hide the truth.””

A pause.

“He changed it.””

The room went silent.

Michael whispered:

“What?””

Thomas looked at me.

“The original records were different.””

I felt dizzy.

“Different how?””

Thomas opened his folder.

Inside was another medical document.

The final missing piece.

And when I saw it, I realized the truth about Michael’s birth was even more complicated than we thought.
