Chapter 12: The Last Move Daniel Made

Evelyn placed the documents on the table.

“I need you both to understand something.””

Michael and I sat across from her.

“What?””

She looked at Michael.

“Your father was preparing for a legal battle.””

Michael frowned.

“About what?””

“Your inheritance.””

The words confused me.

“What inheritance?””

Evelyn opened a file.

“Thomas Reed.””

I looked up.

“What about him?””

She explained that Thomas had become extremely successful over the years.

A business owner.

A wealthy investor.

And because Michael was his biological child, he had rights connected to Thomas’s estate.

Michael stared.

“You’re saying Dad knew?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

Daniel didn’t just hide the truth because he loved Michael.

He hid it because of money.

Thomas had built a fortune.

And Daniel had spent years pretending to be Michael’s father while secretly trying to control access to something he had no claim over.

“How?”” I whispered.

“How did he know about Thomas’s money?””

Evelyn looked at the papers.

“Because he was communicating with Thomas’s former business partner.””

I felt sick.

The betrayal had layers.

Every time I thought we reached the bottom, there was another secret underneath.

Michael looked angry.

“So Dad wanted custody because of money?””

“Possibly,” Evelyn said.

“But there’s more.””

She handed me another document.

I read it.

And my hands started shaking.

It was a legal draft.

A petition.

Daniel planned to challenge my rights as Michael’s mother.

The argument?

That I had supposedly hidden important information about Michael’s biological father.

I stared.

“He wanted to use the secret he knew against me.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Exactly.””

Michael stood up.

“That’s insane.””

“Yes,” Evelyn said.

“But it’s also dangerous.””

That night, I sat alone in the living room.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I thought about the woman I was twenty years ago.

Young.

Scared.

Trying to build a family.

I thought about all the years I spent believing Daniel was punishing me because our marriage failed.

But the truth was darker.

He wasn’t punishing me for leaving.

He was punishing me because I represented the one thing he couldn’t control.

Michael’s love.

The next morning, Thomas came to our house.

I expected awkwardness.

Instead, he looked nervous.

“I owe you both an apology.””

Michael looked at him.

“For what?””

“For staying silent.””

Thomas sat down.

“I should have fought harder.””

Michael studied him.

“You knew about me my whole life?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you find me?””

Thomas looked broken.

“Because Daniel convinced me that you had a happy family.””

Michael looked away.

“That’s not fair.””

“No.””

Thomas nodded.

“It wasn’t.””

Then he looked at me.

“Maria, there’s one more thing.””

I felt tired.

“Another secret?””

He nodded.

“I found something recently.””

He handed me a small envelope.

“What is it?””

“Something Daniel wrote years ago.””

My hands froze.

“Another letter?””

“Yes.””

I opened it.

This one was dated shortly after Michael’s birth.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Daniel’s.

I read the first line.

And my heart stopped.

*If Maria ever discovers the truth, I will make sure she loses Michael before anyone believes her.*

I looked at Thomas.

Then at Michael.

Because suddenly I understood.

The stolen graduation seat.

The custody lies.

The financial schemes.

They were never separate events.

They were all part of one plan.

Daniel had been preparing for one final move.

And now that we knew the truth…

He was about to make it.
