Chapter 8: The Night Maya Was Born
I read the message again.
Then again.
What really happened that night.
Not what happened with Adrian.
Not what happened with the DNA.
Something else.
Something bigger.
I looked at Claire.
“Who sent this?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her shoulders dropped.
“A woman.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Someone who was there when Maya was born.””
The hospital hallway suddenly felt too small.
“Who was there?””
Claire looked terrified.
“I can’t.””
I stepped closer.
“You can.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“If I tell you, everything changes.””
I looked at Maya through the window.
“Everything already changed.””
That finally broke her.
Claire sat down in the hallway chair.
“I met her before Maya was born.””
“Who?””
“Her name was Elena.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Elena?””
I noticed immediately.
“You know that name?””
He looked away.
“I heard it before.””
My anger returned.
“Of course you did.””
“No,” Adrian said quickly.
“Not like that.””
“Then explain.””
He hesitated.
“I thought she was just someone Claire knew.””
Claire looked at him.
“You knew about Elena?””
“Not about this.””
I turned back to Claire.
“Who is Elena?””
Claire wiped her tears.
“She worked at the hospital.””
Dr. Bennett looked surprised.
“As a nurse?””
Claire nodded.
“She helped during Maya’s delivery.””
I waited.
“And?””
Claire’s hands trembled.
“And she knew Adrian wasn’t the only secret.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at me.
“Maya wasn’t born in the hospital records you saw.””
I froze.
“What?””
She continued quietly.
“There was a complication during delivery.””
Maya’s voice came from the doorway.
“Mom.””
Claire looked up.
“I’m sorry.””
Maya looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
I moved beside my daughter.
“You should sit down.””
But Maya shook her head.
“No. I need to know too.””
Claire looked devastated.
“When you were born, the doctors thought you might not survive.””
Maya went quiet.
“They ran emergency tests.””
Claire swallowed.
“And there was a mistake.””
“What kind of mistake?””
Claire looked at me.
“A mistake involving another baby.””
Nobody spoke.
The meaning slowly reached me.
“No.””
Claire nodded.
“No one was supposed to know.””
My stomach twisted.
“What are you saying?””
Adrian stepped back.
“Oh my God.””
I looked at him.
“You know?””
He shook his head.
“I didn’t know the details.””
Claire covered her face.
“After the emergency, the hospital discovered there had been a records mix-up.””
Maya stared at her.
“A mix-up?””
Claire nodded.
“There was another newborn.””
The hallway became silent.
“Two babies,” Claire whispered.
My mind refused to accept it.
“What does that have to do with Maya?””
Claire looked at me.
“Everything.””
Dr. Bennett stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, are you saying the original birth records may be incorrect?””
Claire nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I looked at Maya.
My daughter.
The girl I had raised.
The girl I loved.
The girl who had been carrying secrets that were never hers.
“What are you saying, Claire?””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I’m saying the DNA test might not have been comparing the right person.””
Everyone froze.
A cold feeling moved through me.
All these years.
All these questions.
All these secrets.
Maybe we had been searching for the wrong answer.
Then the hospital elevator doors opened.
A woman stepped out.
She looked older than I expected.
Tired.
Afraid.
She held a worn folder against her chest.
Her eyes locked onto Claire.
Then onto Maya.
“I’m sorry,” the woman whispered.
Claire stood immediately.
“Elena.””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to stop this from happening.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
She looked at me.
Then at Maya.
May you like
And her next words made the entire hallway go silent.
“I’m the person who knows which baby you actually brought home fifteen years ago.””
