Chapter 2: The Secret Appointment

The hallway outside Maya’s room felt colder than the emergency room itself.

Dr. Bennett closed the door behind us.

Claire stood beside me, silent.

Too silent.

The woman who always had an explanation for everything suddenly had nothing to say.

I looked at her.

“Answer me.””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know what you think you saw.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Dr. Bennett glanced between us.

“I need both of you to stay calm.””

I almost laughed.

Calm.

That word had been used too many times that night.

Claire had told Maya to stay calm.

Now the doctor was telling me.

But my daughter was the one in pain, and my wife was the one hiding something.

Dr. Bennett held a folder against his chest.

“The scan shows evidence that suggests Maya’s condition may not have started today.””

Claire looked away.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What does that mean?””

“It means,” Dr. Bennett said carefully, “there may have been warning signs before tonight.””

I turned toward Claire.

“What warning signs?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

The anger that rose inside me wasn’t loud.

It was worse.

It was quiet.

“How long?””

Claire wiped her face.

“Months.””

The hallway seemed to tilt.

“Months?””

Dr. Bennett watched us carefully.

“Maya has a condition that requires immediate attention. But I need to understand her medical history.””

I looked at Claire.

“You knew she was sick?””

“No,” Claire whispered.

“Then what did you know?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The doctor interrupted gently.

“Mr. Carter, Mrs. Carter, this is not the time to argue.

Maya needs treatment. But I need accurate information.””

Claire nodded.

“I took her somewhere.””

My entire body went still.

“Somewhere?””

She avoided my eyes.

“A private clinic.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

My voice echoed down the hallway.

“You were scared, so you kept our daughter’s medical information from me?””

Claire looked toward Maya’s room.

“She begged me not to tell you.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“She was afraid you would panic.””

I shook my head.

“No. Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Don’t make this sound like you were protecting her.””

Claire flinched.

Dr. Bennett stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, when was the appointment?””

Claire hesitated.

“Eight months ago.””

Eight months.

Eight months of secrets.

Eight months of my daughter carrying something alone.

I felt sick.

“Why wasn’t I there?””

Claire whispered, “Because I thought I could handle it.””

I looked at her.

“That’s not your decision to make.””

Before she could answer, the door to Maya’s room opened.

Nurse Nia stepped out.

“Mr. Carter?””

I immediately turned.

“How is she?””

“She’s stable, but she’s asking for you.””

I started walking.

Then I stopped.

Because I heard Claire behind me.

“Please don’t tell her I said anything.””

I slowly turned around.

“What exactly are you afraid I’ll find out?””

Claire’s face changed.

Not sadness.

Not fear.

Panic.

“Nothing.””

But again, she answered too quickly.

Inside the room, Maya looked smaller than she had ever looked.

She forced a weak smile.

“Dad.””

I sat beside her and held her hand.

“I’m here.””

Her eyes moved toward the hallway.

“Did Mom tell you?””

I froze.

“Tell me what?””

Maya looked away.

“I knew this would happen.””

My stomach tightened.

“Maya, what do you mean?””

She pulled the blanket closer.

“Mom said if you found out the truth, you would leave.””

The words hit harder than anything else that night.

“Leave?””

Maya nodded slowly.

“She said you would never forgive her.””

I looked through the glass window toward Claire standing outside.

For the first time, I realized this wasn’t just about a hidden appointment.

There was a reason my wife had been desperate to keep me away from the truth.

A reason she had let our daughter suffer in silence.

I squeezed Maya’s hand.

“Your mom told you that?””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said you weren’t supposed to know who my real doctor was.””

My blood turned cold.

“Your real doctor?””

Maya nodded.

Then her voice dropped to a whisper.

“Dad… Mom has been taking me to see someone else because she found out something about me years ago.””

I stared at her.

“What did she find out?””

Maya looked toward the door.

May you like

And then she said the one sentence that made my entire world collapse.

“She said you weren’t my biological father.””
