Chapter 3: The Truth Hidden in the Files

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The beeping machines around Maya’s bed became distant. The voices in the hallway disappeared. Even the pain on my daughter’s face seemed impossible to process.

Not my biological father.

Those four words had just split my entire life into two pieces.

Before.

And after.

I looked at Maya, waiting for her to tell me she was confused. Waiting for her to laugh nervously and say she had misunderstood.

She didn’t.

She looked terrified.

“Dad,” she whispered, “please don’t be angry.””

My chest tightened.

“Angry?””

I gently squeezed her hand.

“Maya, look at me.””

She slowly met my eyes.

“You could tell me anything.””

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“Mom said you would hate me if you knew.””

The words felt like a punch.

“Hate you?””

I shook my head immediately.

“Maya, listen to me. There is nothing in this world that could make me hate you.””

She covered her face.

“But I’m not really yours.””

My heart broke.

I leaned closer.

“Do you know what makes someone a father?””

She didn’t answer.

“It’s not DNA. It’s every night I stayed awake when you had a fever. It’s teaching you how to ride a bike.

It’s holding your hand when you got your first stitches. It’s being there.””

Her tears fell faster.

“I’m sorry.””

“Don’t apologize for something you didn’t do.””

Behind the glass window, Claire watched us.

She looked like she wanted to come in.

But she stayed outside.

And for the first time, I understood why.

She wasn’t afraid of losing me because of a medical secret.

She was afraid of losing me because of the truth.

A nurse entered with a tablet.

“Mr. Carter, Dr. Bennett needs to see you.””

I looked at Maya.

“I’ll be right back.””

She nodded.

But before I left, she grabbed my wrist.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Please don’t let Mom blame herself.””

That surprised me.

After everything Claire had hidden, Maya was still protecting her.

I walked into the hallway.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“What did she tell you?””

I stared at her.

“You knew she knew?””

Claire’s face collapsed.

“She wasn’t supposed to tell you.””

I felt anger rising again.

“She’s lying in a hospital bed, Claire. She’s scared. And you’re worried about what she says?””

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“No. You were trying to control everything.””

Dr. Bennett approached with a folder.

“I think we need to discuss Maya’s medical history and the information Mrs. Carter provided.””

I looked at Claire.

“The information she provided?””

Claire lowered her eyes.

The doctor opened the folder.

“According to these records, Maya was evaluated at a private clinic eight months ago. Genetic testing was performed.””

My jaw tightened.

“And the results?””

Dr. Bennett paused.

“The results showed a genetic marker that required further investigation.””

Claire’s face went pale.

“But she’s okay now, right?”” I asked.

“That depends on what we find.””

The doctor’s words made my stomach drop.

“Explain.””

He turned the folder around.

“Maya’s current condition appears connected to a hereditary issue. The specialist who reviewed these results recommended immediate follow-up testing.””

I looked at Claire.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She whispered, “Because I thought it would destroy us.””

“What would destroy us?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The truth.””

I waited.

Finally, she said it.

“The clinic found out Maya’s blood type didn’t match yours.””

I stared at her.

That was it.

The secret.

The thing she had carried for years.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“Maya’s fifteen, Claire.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“You knew for fifteen years?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then when?””

Claire looked toward the floor.

“Three years ago.””

I felt numb.

“Three years?””

She nodded.

“Maya needed a medical test before a procedure. The doctor noticed something unusual. They suggested a paternity test.””

“And you did it.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I was terrified.””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You were terrified, so you let me spend three years believing a lie?””

Claire covered her mouth.

“I was afraid I would lose you.””

I looked at her.

“You should have been afraid of losing Maya’s trust.””

Silence filled the hallway.

Then Dr. Bennett spoke.

“There is something else.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked at the papers.

“The clinic records show another person was involved.””

Claire froze.

My eyes moved to her.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

The doctor continued.

“Maya’s biological father was contacted during the original evaluation.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Claire’s face lost all color.

“I didn’t want him involved.””

“Who is he?””

She looked at me.

And the fear in her eyes told me she had been waiting for this moment.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“Tell me his name.””

Claire opened her mouth.

Then a voice came from behind us.

“I think I should introduce myself.””

I turned.

A man stood at the end of the hallway.

A man I had never seen before.

But Maya’s medical file was in his hand.

And on the cover was a name I recognized from the genetic report.

*Dr. Adrian Cole.*
