Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Secret

Claire ended the call immediately.

Too quickly.

But not before I saw the fear in her eyes.

Not guilt.

Not sadness.

Fear.

The kind of fear people have when something they buried starts digging its way back to the surface.

“Who was that?””

She put her phone away.

“No one.””

I stared at her.

“Claire.””

She looked toward Maya’s room.

“Not here.””

I almost laughed.

That was her answer to everything.

Not here.

Not now.

Not yet.

For years, she had been deciding when I deserved the truth.

But that ended tonight.

“You don’t get to choose anymore.””

Her face tightened.

“I’m trying to protect Maya.””

“You keep saying that.””

“And it’s true.””

I stepped closer.

“Then explain why every time someone mentions the truth, you look terrified.””

She had no answer.

Adrian walked back toward us.

“Who called?””

Claire immediately looked at him.

“This doesn’t involve you.””

His expression hardened.

“I think it does.””

I looked between them.

“What are you two not telling me?””

Neither answered.

That silence was becoming more painful than any confession.

Dr. Bennett approached from the nurse station.

“Maya’s test results should be available soon.””

I nodded.

Then he lowered his voice.

“There is something unusual.””

My attention shifted immediately.

“What?””

“The genetic information from the clinic doesn’t match the family history provided.””

I looked at Claire.

Again.

“She gave false information?””

Dr. Bennett didn’t answer directly.

But he didn’t need to.

My wife had spent years editing reality.

A nurse approached with a folder.

“Dr. Bennett, this was delivered for Maya Carter.””

The doctor took it.

Then frowned.

“This isn’t from our hospital.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who sent it?””

The nurse checked the label.

“A private courier.””

She handed it over.

Dr. Bennett opened the folder.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

Then at Claire.

“Mrs. Carter, did you authorize additional testing?””

Claire went completely still.

“No.””

The doctor removed a document.

“This report says Maya had genetic testing performed two years ago.””

I stared.

“Two years ago?””

Claire shook her head.

“I didn’t know about that.””

Adrian suddenly spoke.

“I did.””

Everyone turned toward him.

My eyes narrowed.

“You knew?””

He looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two years ago.””

My anger returned.

“So everyone knew except me.””

Adrian looked down.

“I didn’t have the right to tell you.””

“You had no problem knowing my daughter’s medical information.””

His jaw tightened.

“She is my daughter too.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Because biologically, he was right.

But emotionally?

He had missed fifteen years.

I lowered my voice.

“You don’t get to walk in after fifteen years and claim a place you never earned.””

Adrian didn’t argue.

Maybe because he knew.

Then Maya’s voice came from behind us.

“Dad?””

I turned.

She was standing in the doorway with Nurse Nia beside her.

“Maya, you shouldn’t be standing.””

She ignored that.

Her eyes moved between me, Claire, and Adrian.

“I need to tell you something.””

I walked toward her.

“What is it?””

She looked at her mother.

“Mom didn’t find out about my condition three years ago.””

Claire’s face changed.

“Maya—”

“No.””

Maya’s voice shook.

“But I need to say it.””

The hallway became silent.

“She knew when I was little.””

I froze.

“What?””

Maya looked at me.

“She found old medical records.””

Claire whispered.

“Maya, please.””

But Maya continued.

“She knew there was a chance I inherited something from my biological father.””

My heart pounded.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Maya looked down.

“Because she was afraid you would leave.””

Again.

That same fear.

But then Maya said something that made even Claire look shocked.

“She wasn’t only afraid you would leave because of Adrian.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because the test showed something else.””

My voice became quiet.

“What else?””

She looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

“Dad…”

A pause.

“She said the DNA results didn’t just prove Adrian was my father.””

The hallway went silent.

May you like

Maya whispered:

“They proved you weren’t the only person who had been lied to.””
