Chapter 4: The Man Who Came Back
Dr. Adrian Cole walked toward us slowly.
He wasn’t rushing.
He wasn’t apologizing.
That bothered me more than anything.
A stranger had appeared in a hospital hallway holding my daughter’s medical records, and he looked like he belonged there.
Claire stepped between us.
“Adrian, what are you doing here?””
His eyes moved to her.
“You called me.””
My entire body went cold.
“I called you?””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No, I didn’t.””
Adrian looked at her calmly.
“Claire, you know I received the message.””
“What message?””
I looked at my wife.
She didn’t answer.
Dr. Bennett looked uncomfortable.
“Everyone needs to calm down. This is a hospital.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone kept saying that.
Calm down.
Stay calm.
But my daughter’s entire life had been built on secrets.
I stepped toward Adrian.
“You’re Maya’s biological father.””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
The simple answer angered me more than denial would have.
“You knew about her?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
His expression changed slightly.
“Since she was born.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
Claire whispered, “Stop.””
But I couldn’t.
“You knew my daughter existed for fifteen years?””
Adrian looked away.
“I knew.””
“And you stayed away?””
His silence answered.
I turned toward Claire.
“You knew he knew.””
She nodded faintly.
“Only recently.””
“Recently?””
Her voice broke.
“He found out about the medical issue too.””
I stared at both of them.
“So while I was sitting at home believing my family was normal, both of you were discussing my daughter’s health behind my back?””
“No,” Claire said quickly.
“Yes,” Adrian replied at the same time.
They both stopped.
That told me everything.
Maya’s door opened.
Nurse Nia stepped out.
“Please keep your voices down. Maya is awake.””
The anger inside me disappeared instantly.
Because no matter what Claire had done, no matter who Adrian was, there was one person who mattered.
My daughter.
I walked back into the room.
Maya looked at me.
Then she looked past me.
At Adrian.
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
That terrified me.
“Maya,” I whispered.
She looked down.
“I knew he was here.””
I froze.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Mom told me.””
I looked at Claire through the glass.
“She told you about him?””
Maya wiped her eyes.
“She said I had a right to know.””
I sat beside her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her voice became small.
“Because Mom said you would leave.””
Again.
That same fear.
That same manipulation.
But now I wondered something else.
Was Claire afraid I would leave?
Or was she afraid Maya would choose me over her?
“Maya,” I said softly, “I need you to tell me the truth.””
She nodded.
“Okay.””
“Did you ever meet him?””
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“When?””
“Last year.””
I stared at her.
“Last year?””
She nodded.
“Mom took me to see him.””
I looked at Claire.
She was standing outside the room.
Her face was filled with regret.
“Why?””
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he was the only person who knew about my condition.””
I swallowed.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because Mom said you weren’t my real dad.””
The words hurt every time.
But then Maya said something that hurt even more.
“She also said you would stop loving me when you found out.””
I closed my eyes.
That was the lie.
Not the secret.
Not the DNA.
The lie that my daughter needed to fear losing me.
I stood and walked toward Claire.
She immediately started crying.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“No, you don’t.””
“I made mistakes.””
“You made decisions.””
She looked at me.
“I was scared.””
I pointed toward Maya’s room.
“She was scared too.””
Claire had no answer.
Then Adrian stepped forward.
“I need to tell you something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Maya’s condition isn’t the only reason I came back.””
A chill ran through me.
“What are you talking about?””
He looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“There’s something Claire never told you about the night Maya was born.””
Claire’s expression changed instantly.
“Adrian, don’t.””
But he continued.
“Because the truth is…”
He stopped.
The hallway went silent.
May you like
And then he said:
“Maya’s birth certificate was changed before you ever signed it.””
