Chapter 7: The Test That Changed Everything
Maya’s words stayed in the air.
They proved you weren’t the only person who had been lied to.
I stared at my daughter, trying to understand what she meant.
Not the only person?
My mind raced through every possibility, but none of them made sense.
Claire looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“Maya,” she whispered, “you don’t understand what you’re saying.””
Maya’s face tightened.
“Yes, I do.””
The strength in her voice shocked me.
My daughter, the same girl who had apologized for being sick, was finally standing up.
“Mom made me promise not to tell you.””
I looked at Claire.
“Promise her what?””
Claire stepped forward.
“Maya, please.””
“No.””
Maya shook her head.
“I’m tired of secrets.””
Those four words hit harder than anything else.
I walked closer to my daughter.
“Tell me.””
She looked down.
“After the first test, Mom found out something about the results.””
“What?””
Maya swallowed.
“She said there was an error.””
I waited.
“She said the clinic might have mixed up the samples.””
Claire nodded quickly.
“Yes. That’s what happened.””
But Maya looked at her.
“No, Mom.””
Claire froze.
“You told me that because you didn’t want me to ask questions.””
The hallway went quiet.
I looked at Claire.
“Is that true?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
Maya continued.
“Mom ordered another test.””
My chest tightened.
“And?””
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“She never told me the results.””
I turned to Claire.
“You tested her again?””
Claire’s voice cracked.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I was scared.””
“You were scared, so you kept making choices for everyone.””
Claire covered her face.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
For the first time that night, she sounded less like someone defending herself and more like someone who had been drowning in her own lies.
But I still needed answers.
“What did the second test show?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian stepped forward.
“I can tell you.””
I looked at him.
“Go ahead.””
He hesitated.
“The second test confirmed Maya is my biological daughter.””
I nodded slowly.
“That’s what we already knew.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Something in his voice made me stop.
“The second test showed something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Adrian looked at Claire.
“Claire never told you because the result affected you too.””
I felt a chill.
“Explain.””
Adrian took a breath.
“The test compared Maya’s DNA with yours.””
I waited.
“And?””
His voice lowered.
“It showed no biological connection.””
I stared at him.
“That’s not new.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“That part isn’t.””
Then he said:
“The problem is the timeline.””
I frowned.
“What timeline?””
Adrian looked at me.
“The DNA sample used for comparison wasn’t from today.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What are you saying?””
He looked toward Claire.
“Tell him.””
Claire stood completely still.
“Claire.””
Her eyes closed.
Then she whispered:
“The sample was from when Maya was a baby.””
Everything stopped.
A thousand thoughts crashed into each other.
“When she was a baby?””
Claire nodded.
“I kept the hospital records.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I felt numb.
“You kept DNA records for fifteen years?””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
She started crying.
“I suspected.””
The word echoed.
Suspected.
Not knew.
Not believed.
Suspected.
“You suspected I wasn’t her father when she was born?””
Claire nodded.
“I didn’t know for sure until later.””
I looked at Maya.
She was watching me carefully.
Waiting.
Waiting to see if the truth would change how I looked at her.
It wouldn’t.
It never could.
But I was looking at Claire now.
“You let me raise her without knowing.””
“I loved you.””
“That is not an answer.””
She wiped her face.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She didn’t respond.
Because there was no good answer.
The hallway fell silent again.
Then Dr. Bennett returned.
“I’m sorry to interrupt, but Maya’s condition requires immediate treatment.””
I turned instantly.
“Is she getting worse?””
“No. But we need to understand her genetic history before proceeding.””
He looked at the documents.
“The information we have has too many gaps.””
I nodded.
“What do you need?””
He hesitated.
“We need the original birth records.””
Claire went pale.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
I felt my stomach drop.
“No?””
Dr. Bennett looked confused.
“Mrs. Carter?””
Claire shook her head.
“I mean… I don’t have them.””
But Adrian spoke quietly.
“Yes, you do.””
Claire turned toward him.
“Stop.””
“You kept them.””
“What are you talking about?””
Adrian looked at me.
“She didn’t just hide the DNA results.””
He paused.
“She hid the original birth certificate.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Where is it?””
Claire said nothing.
Then her phone rang again.
The same number.
The same fear.
This time, she didn’t answer.
The caller left a voicemail.
A notification appeared on the screen.
Claire looked at it.
And the color drained from her face.
I took the phone from her hand.
She didn’t stop me.
The message was short.
Only one sentence.
May you like
But it changed everything.
*“Claire, if he knows the truth about the birth records, he’ll find out what really happened that night.””*
