Chapter 9: The Trap He Built for Me

The headlines appeared before sunrise.

I didn't need to open my phone to know.

I could feel it.

The world had already decided what story it wanted to believe.

By morning, Adrian had done exactly what he planned.

He had turned himself into the victim.

And me into the villain.

My lawyer placed a tablet on the table in front of me.

"Elena, you need to prepare yourself.""

I looked at the screen.

The articles were everywhere.

Whitmore Foundation Investigation.

Missing Funds.

Wife Accused of Unauthorized Transfers.

My name was everywhere.

But not the truth.

Not yet.

I stared at the pictures they used.

Photos of me at charity events.

Photos of me signing papers.

Photos that made it look like I had been responsible for everything.

My hands tightened.

"He planned this.""

Marcus sat across from me.

"He did.""

Julian stood near the window, reading through documents.

"The timing is too precise. The fake transfers, the public scene, the accusations.""

He turned.

"He wanted the humiliation to happen first.""

Caleb nodded.

"Because once people saw you as unstable, they would question everything you said afterward.""

I closed my eyes.

That was Adrian's greatest weapon.

Not money.

Not power.

Perception.

For eight years, he had carefully built a version of me.

The quiet wife.

The woman behind the successful man.

The person who had no voice.

And now he was using that image against me.

My lawyer, Daniel Hayes, opened another folder.

"There is something important.""

I looked up.

"What?""

He pulled out several documents.

"The signature they found wasn't just copied.""

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?""

"The documents were created from your actual signature sample.""

I frowned.

"How?""

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

"Someone had access to your personal records.""

I already knew the answer.

Sophia.

My heart sank.

But Daniel continued.

"However, there's a problem with Adrian's plan.""

"What problem?""

He smiled slightly.

"He underestimated you.""

I almost laughed.

Because Adrian had spent years doing exactly that.

Daniel placed a flash drive on the table.

"Your brothers gave me the security records from your house.""

Julian looked at me.

"We found something.""

"What?""

Daniel connected it.

A video appeared.

Not from my house.

From the foundation office.

The footage showed Adrian entering late at night.

Alone.

Carrying a folder.

My breath stopped.

"He was there?""

Julian nodded.

"Two nights before you supposedly approved those transfers.""

The video continued.

Adrian opened a cabinet.

Removed documents.

Then met someone outside the office.

I leaned closer.

"Who is that?""

The person stepped into view.

My heart dropped.

It was Vanessa.

Daniel paused the footage.

"There's more.""

He played another clip.

This time, it showed Sophia.

But she wasn't giving Adrian information.

She was confronting him.

The audio was faint, but clear enough.

"You promised Elena wouldn't get hurt.""

Adrian's voice responded.

"She'll survive.""

My jaw tightened.

Then Sophia said something that made everyone in the room freeze.

"She is your wife.""

Adrian laughed.

"Not for much longer.""

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because we finally had something Adrian couldn't explain away.

Proof.

Not rumors.

Not accusations.

Proof.

Caleb looked at me.

"Now we fight back.""

I looked down at the screen.

For the first time since the gala, I didn't feel powerless.

I felt something else.

Determination.

But before I could speak, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone became silent.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Thomas Reed. I was Adrian Whitmore's personal accountant.""

I stood still.

"Was?""

There was a pause.

"I was fired yesterday morning.""

My brothers exchanged looks.

"Why are you calling me?""

His voice lowered.

"Because I know where the original documents are.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What documents?""

"The ones Adrian used to frame you.""

I looked at Marcus.

Then Julian.

"Where are you?""

Another pause.

Then he whispered:

"I can't tell you over the phone.""

The line became quiet.

"Mrs. Whitmore, Adrian knows I'm trying to help you.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"How?""

Thomas took a shaky breath.

"Because he already sent someone after me.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

And then Marcus noticed something outside the window.

A black vehicle parked across the street.

The same vehicle had been there since morning.

Caleb immediately moved toward the door.

But I stopped him.

Because for the first time, I wasn't afraid.

I looked at my brothers.

"Adrian thought he could erase me.""

I picked up the folder.

"But he made one mistake.""

Julian looked at me.

"What mistake?""

May you like

I looked toward the window.

"He forgot I was never alone.""
