Chapter 8: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming
I stared at the phone.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
Because the name on the screen belonged to the one person I never thought I would question.
Sophia.
My best friend.
The woman who had held my hand through my mother's funeral.
The woman who knew every detail of my marriage.
The woman who had told me for years that Adrian didn't deserve me.
"No...""
The word came out before I could stop it.
Marcus looked at me.
"Elena.""
I shook my head.
"She wouldn't.""
Nobody said anything.
Because they knew.
Sometimes the person you defend the most is the person who hurts you the deepest.
Julian opened the message carefully.
I didn't want to see it.
But I needed to.
Adrian's message was simple.
'The files are in her office. I need access before the gala.''
My hands started shaking.
The gala.
Tonight.
Everything had been planned.
Julian scrolled further.
There were more messages.
Weeks of them.
Conversations between Adrian and Sophia.
About my schedule.
My meetings.
My habits.
Things only someone close to me would know.
I sat down.
Not because I was weak.
Because my body couldn't process another betrayal.
Marcus crouched in front of me.
"Look at me.""
I did.
"This is not your fault.""
I swallowed.
"She knew everything.""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
"She knew I trusted her.""
"Yes.""
The honesty hurt.
But I needed it.
Caleb suddenly looked toward the hallway.
"Someone's here.""
Everyone froze.
A shadow moved near the front entrance.
Then a voice called out.
"Elena?""
My blood ran cold.
Sophia.
She stepped into the living room.
And the second she saw the phone in Julian's hand, her face changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
"You weren't supposed to find that.""
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Silence.
Complete silence.
I stared at her.
The woman who had spent years sitting across from me at my kitchen table.
The woman who knew my dreams.
My fears.
My secrets.
"You knew?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Elena...""
"No.""
I stood.
My voice shaking.
"Don't say my name like you're still my friend.""
Sophia looked down.
"I didn't want this to happen.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Then why did it?""
She wiped her face.
"Because Adrian made sure I had no choice.""
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
She looked terrified.
"Three years ago, Adrian found out about my brother's financial problems.""
My expression changed.
"He threatened you.""
She nodded.
"He said if I didn't help him, my brother would lose everything.""
Julian frowned.
"So you helped him manipulate Elena?""
Sophia closed her eyes.
"I told myself I was only giving him information.""
Her voice broke.
"But then he started asking for more.""
I felt a painful emptiness.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Sophia looked at me.
"Because every time I tried...""
She stopped.
"Every time I tried, Adrian reminded me that he could destroy my family.""
The anger inside me fought with something else.
Pain.
Because I understood fear.
But I also understood betrayal.
"You watched him hurt me tonight.""
Sophia started crying.
"I know.""
"You stood there while he embarrassed me.""
"I know.""
"You knew he was planning this.""
She couldn't answer.
And that silence told me enough.
Then Caleb's phone rang again.
He answered.
His face changed instantly.
"What?""
Everyone looked at him.
He listened for a few seconds.
Then he looked at me.
"Elena...""
I knew from his expression.
Something worse had happened.
"What now?""
He lowered the phone.
"The police just arrived at Adrian's office.""
My heart tightened.
"Why?""
Caleb looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
"Because they found evidence that someone tried to make it look like you stole money from the foundation.""
The room went completely silent.
Sophia covered her mouth.
Julian's expression hardened.
Marcus slowly stood.
Because now we understood.
Adrian wasn't just trying to take everything from me.
May you like
He was preparing to make me the villain.
And somewhere, right now, he was telling the world that I was the criminal.
