Chapter 5: The Woman With the Envelope

Nobody moved.

The woman standing at the entrance held the entire ballroom hostage with nothing more than a sealed envelope in her hand.

She wasn't dressed like the guests.

No designer gown.

No expensive jewelry.

No perfectly styled hair.

She wore a simple navy coat over a modest dress, her hands gripping the envelope so tightly her knuckles turned white.

But the fear on Vanessa's face told everyone one thing.

This woman mattered.

Adrian took a step backward.

"Rachel...""

The name left his mouth like a confession.

A wave of whispers spread through the ballroom.

Vanessa turned toward him.

"You know her?""

Adrian didn't answer.

That was becoming his pattern tonight.

Silence whenever the truth got too close.

Rachel walked forward slowly.

Her eyes never left Adrian.

"I didn't want to come here.""

Her voice was calm, but there was pain underneath it.

"But after seeing what happened tonight, I realized I couldn't stay quiet anymore.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Who are you?""

Rachel looked at him.

Then at me.

"I'm someone who trusted Adrian.""

The words landed heavily.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Another woman.

Another secret.

Another piece of a life Adrian had hidden from me.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"This is ridiculous.""

Rachel looked at her.

"You should know better than anyone that it's not.""

Vanessa's face changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Julian noticed.

So did Caleb.

I watched Adrian carefully.

Eight years of marriage had taught me every small change in his expression.

The way his jaw tightened when he lied.

The way his eyes moved when he searched for an escape.

Right now, he was looking for one.

"Rachel, leave," Adrian said.

His voice was low.

Almost pleading.

She gave a sad smile.

"You used to say that when you wanted people to disappear.""

The room went quiet.

"Do you remember saying the same thing to me?""

Adrian's face hardened.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Rachel looked down at the envelope.

"Of course you don't.""

She walked closer.

"Because you thought I would never find out.""

Marcus looked at me.

I could feel the questions in his eyes.

But I didn't have answers.

Not yet.

Rachel stopped in front of the stage.

"I worked for the Whitmore Foundation for five years.""

A few guests recognized her.

Someone whispered.

"She was the financial director.""

My heart sank.

The foundation.

Again.

Rachel continued.

"I believed in what we were doing. Helping women who had nowhere else to go.""

She looked at Adrian.

"Until I discovered money was being moved without approval.""

Adrian immediately interrupted.

"That's a lie.""

Rachel didn't flinch.

"I kept records.""

She lifted the envelope.

"And I brought copies.""

The ballroom erupted.

Adrian moved toward her.

"Give me that.""

Caleb stepped between them.

Not threatening.

Just standing there.

A reminder.

Adrian stopped.

Rachel looked at me.

"I'm sorry.""

Those two words surprised me.

"For what?""

She swallowed.

"For not coming sooner.""

I didn't know what to say.

Because a part of me wanted to be angry.

Another part understood.

Fear could silence people.

Adrian had built his entire life around making people afraid of challenging him.

Rachel handed the envelope to Marcus.

He opened it carefully.

Julian looked over his shoulder.

Their expressions changed as they read.

"What is it?"" I asked.

Julian didn't answer immediately.

That scared me.

Finally, he looked up.

"Elena...""

I waited.

"The foundation wasn't losing money.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

"What?""

Marcus closed the folder.

"The reports were manipulated.""

Rachel nodded.

"Someone created false expenses to make it appear the charity was struggling.""

The room became silent.

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

Not with fear anymore.

With anger.

"You told me everything was under control.""

Adrian snapped.

"Not now.""

That one sentence revealed more than he intended.

Everyone heard it.

Everyone understood.

Vanessa stepped back.

"You lied to me too?""

Adrian ignored her.

He looked at me.

"Elena, listen.""

I almost couldn't believe it.

After everything.

After the humiliation.

After the betrayal.

He still thought he could explain his way out.

"You need to understand the situation.""

I stared at him.

"The situation?""

My voice was quiet.

"You mean the situation where you slapped me in front of hundreds of people?""

His face tightened.

"The situation where you planned to remove me from my own foundation?""

He looked away.

"The situation where you brought your mistress to an event honoring abused women and made me apologize to her?""

Nobody spoke.

Because there was nothing left to defend.

Then Marcus's phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

And his expression changed.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Concern.

"What is it?"" I asked.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

"Elena...""

He paused.

"The documents Rachel brought aren't just about the foundation.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What else?""

Marcus turned the phone toward Julian.

Then they both looked at Adrian.

"There's a signature on one of these transactions.""

My heart started racing.

"Whose signature?""

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Because he already knew.

May you like

And the way he looked at me told me the truth was going to hurt.

"It's yours.""
