Chapter 4: The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable
The room felt smaller after Julian's words.
Everyone was staring at Adrian.
Not me.
Not Vanessa.
Him.
For years, Adrian had built his life around control.
He controlled meetings.
He controlled conversations.
He controlled what people believed.
But now, surrounded by hundreds of witnesses, his carefully created image was falling apart piece by piece.
"What are you accusing me of?"" Adrian asked.
His voice was sharp.
Defensive.
Julian didn't react.
"I'm not accusing you of anything.""
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.
"I'm showing people what the records say.""
Adrian's eyes followed the folder.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
Vanessa whispered, "Adrian, do something.""
He ignored her.
That told me everything.
The woman who had believed she was standing beside a powerful man suddenly realized she was standing beside someone who might not be able to protect her.
Julian placed the folder on the table.
"I started looking into the foundation's financial reports after Elena mentioned missing documents.""
I looked at him.
"You knew?""
He nodded slightly.
"I knew something was wrong.""
Marcus stepped beside him.
"We didn't tell you everything because we needed proof.""
My chest tightened.
They had been protecting me.
Quietly.
The same way I had spent years protecting everyone else.
Adrian laughed suddenly.
A short, bitter laugh.
"You three think you can destroy me?""
Nobody answered.
He looked around the room.
"I'm Adrian Whitmore.""
His voice grew louder.
"I built this company. I created this foundation. People are only here because of my name.""
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Marcus remained calm.
"Names can open doors.""
He paused.
"But actions determine what happens after people walk through them.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"You think you're better than me because you're a judge?""
Marcus didn't blink.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"I think my sister deserved honesty.""
The word sister still seemed to bother Adrian.
Because he was finally realizing something.
The woman he had treated like she had no power was connected to people with influence far beyond his imagination.
But the truth was, my brothers' power was never what mattered.
It was their loyalty.
Something Adrian had never understood.
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous.""
Everyone looked at her.
She forced a smile.
"You're all acting like Elena is some innocent victim, but she knew about the relationship.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She crossed her arms.
"She knew Adrian loved me.""
The room became silent again.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Not with affection.
With anger.
Because she had just revealed something he didn't want exposed.
I slowly turned toward him.
"You told her that?""
Adrian looked away.
That was enough.
A painful realization settled inside me.
He hadn't just cheated.
He had built an entire story where I was the obstacle.
Where Vanessa was the woman who deserved sympathy.
Where I was the problem he needed to remove.
Vanessa continued.
"He said your marriage was already over.""
My eyes stayed on Adrian.
"Was that true?""
He didn't answer.
And somehow, his silence hurt more than a lie.
I nodded slowly.
"Eight years.""
My voice was quiet.
"Eight years, Adrian.""
The crowd listened.
"I stood beside you when nobody knew your name.""
A tear slipped down my cheek.
Not because I was weak.
Because I was finally letting myself feel everything I had buried.
"I believed we were building something together.""
Adrian's expression softened for a moment.
Almost like guilt appeared.
Almost.
Then his phone rang.
The sound cut through the silence.
Everyone looked at him.
He glanced at the screen.
And his face changed.
Not fear this time.
Shock.
He answered.
"Hello?""
Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.
But everyone saw Adrian's reaction.
The color drained from his face.
"What do you mean she's there?""
My heart skipped.
Who's there?
Adrian looked toward the ballroom entrance.
Slowly.
Like he was afraid of what he would see.
Then the doors opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Everyone turned.
She held a sealed envelope in her hand.
Adrian whispered her name.
May you like
And for the first time that night, Vanessa looked terrified.
Because the woman standing at the entrance was the one person who could expose the secret they had both spent years hiding.
