Chapter 7: The Stranger Inside My Home
The moment Caleb said those words, every thought disappeared from my mind.
Someone was inside my house.
Not a stranger.
Not a random burglar.
Someone who had access to my private files.
Someone who knew where I kept the documents Adrian needed.
The same documents that could destroy everything I had spent years building.
I looked at Adrian.
He didn't look surprised.
That was the worst part.
He looked like a man who already knew this possibility existed.
"Adrian," I said quietly.
His eyes shifted toward me.
"Tell me I'm wrong.""
He didn't answer.
Marcus immediately noticed.
"Your silence is an answer.""
Adrian straightened.
"You don't understand what you're talking about.""
Julian stepped closer.
"Then explain.""
Adrian looked around the ballroom.
Hundreds of people were watching.
The cameras were still recording.
The same cameras he had feared earlier.
For once, he had nowhere to hide.
"I need to make a phone call.""
Caleb shook his head.
"No.""
Adrian looked at him.
"You don't get to control me.""
Caleb's expression remained calm.
"Tonight, you lost that privilege.""
The room went silent.
I had never seen Adrian speechless before.
Not once.
He always had an answer.
Always had a way to twist the situation.
But now, every person in the room had seen the truth.
My husband wasn't a powerful man being attacked.
He was a man trying to escape consequences.
Marcus touched my shoulder.
"We're leaving.""
I looked at him.
"But my house...""
Julian interrupted gently.
"We already have people there.""
I froze.
"People?""
He nodded.
"When Caleb got the call, I contacted security.""
Adrian immediately looked at him.
"You had no right.""
Julian looked back.
"Neither did whoever entered Elena's home.""
The ballroom doors opened.
A security officer quietly approached Marcus.
He whispered something.
Marcus's expression changed.
"What?""
My heart sank.
"What happened?""
Marcus looked at me.
"They found someone inside.""
The air left my lungs.
"Who?""
Nobody answered.
And that terrified me.
Caleb stepped forward.
"Let's go.""
The drive back felt unreal.
I sat in the back seat with my brothers.
For the first time in years, I wasn't sitting beside Adrian.
I wasn't trying to explain myself.
I wasn't trying to fix something I didn't break.
I watched the city lights pass through the window.
Everything I thought I knew about my marriage had changed in one night.
Marcus noticed my silence.
"You okay?""
I laughed softly.
It wasn't happiness.
"I don't know.""
That was the truth.
"I spent eight years thinking I knew him.""
Julian looked at me.
"You knew the person he wanted everyone to see.""
I looked down at my hands.
"I ignored so many signs.""
"No," Marcus said.
His voice was firm.
"You trusted someone you loved.""
I wanted to believe him.
But guilt still sat heavy inside me.
When we arrived at the house, the front door was open.
My home.
The place where I had felt safe.
Now it looked like a crime scene.
Not because anything was destroyed.
Because someone had crossed a line.
Caleb walked ahead.
"Stay behind us.""
I almost argued.
Then I stopped.
Because for the first time, I allowed someone else to protect me.
Inside, everything looked normal.
Almost too normal.
The living room was untouched.
The lights were still on.
The flowers Adrian had sent me last week were still sitting on the table.
Then Julian pointed.
"The office.""
The door was slightly open.
My stomach tightened.
That room contained everything.
Foundation records.
Personal files.
Family documents.
Things Adrian should never have been able to access.
Caleb entered first.
A few seconds passed.
Then he called out.
"She's gone.""
I walked in slowly.
The drawers were open.
The files had been searched.
But nothing looked stolen.
That confused me.
"What were they looking for?""
Marcus looked around.
"Something specific.""
Julian picked up a small piece of paper from the desk.
His face changed.
"What is it?""
He handed it to me.
It was a note.
Only three words were written.
I know everything.
My skin turned cold.
"Everything about what?""
Nobody answered.
Then we heard a sound.
A phone vibrating.
Not mine.
Not my brothers'.
It came from inside the room.
Caleb looked toward the bookshelf.
Slowly, he moved closer.
Behind a row of books was a hidden compartment.
Inside was an old phone.
A phone I had never seen before.
Julian picked it up.
The screen lit.
There was one unread message.
From Adrian.
My heart stopped.
Because the message wasn't sent tonight.
It was sent three months ago.
May you like
And the person who received it was someone whose name I recognized immediately.
The name of my closest friend.
