Chapter 2: The Family He Never Knew

Adrian stared at Marcus like he was trying to remember where he had seen him before.

The room remained silent.

Everyone was waiting.

Waiting to see what would happen next.

Vanessa leaned closer to Adrian.

"Who is that?""

Adrian ignored her.

His eyes stayed on Marcus.

"You have something to say?""

Marcus didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

"Actually," Marcus said, "I do.""

His calm tone made several guests turn toward him.

"I was going to introduce myself earlier.""

Adrian straightened his jacket.

"I'm not interested.""

Marcus gave a small nod.

"That's unfortunate.""

Then he looked at me.

"Because Elena deserves better introductions than this.""

Something shifted in the room.

People started whispering.

Vanessa's confidence weakened.

She looked from Marcus to me.

Then back to Adrian.

"Adrian, who is he?""

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I don't know.""

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Not because Adrian didn't know Marcus.

Because it reminded me that for eight years, he never tried to know my world.

Julian stepped away from the wall.

A few guests recognized him immediately.

The whispers grew louder.

"Isn't that Julian Cross?""

"The founder of NovaTech?""

"Why is he here?""

Adrian's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

For the first time, he looked nervous.

Caleb followed.

He adjusted his suit jacket and calmly looked around the ballroom.

A few people recognized his badge.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

The man who had controlled every room he entered suddenly realized he wasn't the most powerful person there.

Vanessa grabbed Adrian's arm.

"What's happening?""

Adrian didn't answer.

I watched him.

The same man who had once told me I was lucky he married me.

The same man who said my past didn't matter.

The same man who believed my family was ordinary.

He finally understood.

"Elena," Adrian said slowly, "who are these people?""

I looked at my brothers.

Then back at him.

"My family.""

The color drained from his face.

Vanessa blinked.

"Family?""

Marcus nodded.

"Her brothers.""

The silence afterward felt heavier than the slap.

Adrian stared at me.

"You never told me.""

I gave him a small smile.

"You never asked.""

That sentence hit him harder than any argument we had ever had.

Because it was true.

Adrian knew my favorite food.

He knew my schedule.

He knew what I wore to events.

But he didn't know my childhood.

He didn't know my family.

He didn't know the people who would stand beside me when he tried to destroy me.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

A little too loudly.

"Okay, this is dramatic, but it doesn't change what happened.""

Everyone looked at her.

She lifted her chin.

"Elena attacked me verbally. She ruined my moment. Adrian was defending me.""

Caleb looked at her.

"Interesting.""

His voice was quiet.

"Because the security footage tells a different story.""

My heart stopped.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"What footage?""

Caleb reached into his pocket.

Not for a weapon.

Not for anything dramatic.

Just his phone.

He showed something to Marcus.

Then Julian.

Their expressions changed.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

"Before you demand another apology, maybe everyone should see what happened before that slap.""

Vanessa's face went pale.

"What are you talking about?""

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked around the room.

For the first time, he looked trapped.

I watched him realize something.

This was no longer his stage.

This was no longer a room he controlled.

He grabbed my arm.

"Elena, we need to talk privately.""

I pulled away.

"No.""

The entire ballroom heard it.

One simple word.

But it was the first time I had said it without fear.

Adrian froze.

Marcus stepped between us.

"Don't touch my sister again.""

The words landed like thunder.

Adrian looked at him.

Then at me.

"Sister?""

He whispered it.

Like the word itself was impossible.

I watched his face change.

Confusion.

Fear.

Realization.

Then Marcus turned toward the large screen behind the stage.

The same screen that had displayed the foundation presentation all night.

"Play the recording.""

The lights dimmed.

Everyone turned toward the screen.

And as the first image appeared, Vanessa suddenly grabbed Adrian's hand and whispered something that made his entire expression collapse.

Because the footage didn't just show what happened tonight.

May you like

It revealed a secret they thought I would never discover.

And the name appearing on the screen was the one person Adrian never expected to see.
