Chapter 9: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About

For years, I had heard about Mateo’s grandfather.

Everyone described him the same way.

Strict.

Traditional.

Difficult.

But fair.

I never met him.

Yet somehow, he had protected me more than people who sat across from me at family dinners.

Daniel looked at Ernesto.

“You received notification?””

Ernesto nodded.

“This morning.””

“And you didn’t mention it?””

“No.””

Mateo laughed once.

Not happily.

“You’re unbelievable.””

Ernesto ignored him.

“Daniel, explain.””

The attorney slowly opened his briefcase.

“I was hoping this would never become necessary.””

“Necessary for what?”” Mateo asked.

Daniel looked at him.

“For you to understand what your grandfather was really protecting.””

He removed another folder.

I almost sighed.

Another folder.

Another hidden truth.

Daniel placed it on the table.

“Your grandfather created a trust connected to the company.””

Ernesto’s face tightened.

“The company belongs to me.””

“No.””

Daniel corrected him calmly.

“It belongs to the family trust.””

Everyone stared.

Ernesto’s voice became sharper.

“I built that company.””

“You expanded it,” Daniel said.

“Your father created the foundation.””

Mateo looked confused.

“Why am I only hearing this now?””

“Because your father controlled access to the documents.””

Everyone turned toward Ernesto.

He looked furious.

“That is not true.””

Daniel opened the folder.

“The trust instructions were clear.””

He read:

“The person responsible for company leadership must demonstrate integrity, fairness, and respect toward employees and family members.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with today?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Everything.””

He continued.

“The trust included a condition.””

Mateo leaned forward.

“What condition?””

Daniel looked directly at Ernesto.

“That if the company leadership attempted to use family assets to control another person’s legal rights, the leadership position would be reviewed.””

The room went silent.

Ernesto looked at Beatriz.

Then at Mateo.

“You think this is about a house?””

Mateo answered.

“No.””

His father stared.

“It’s about everything.””

That was the moment I realized.

The house was never the whole battle.

It was the first crack.

The first time someone had challenged them.

And once the wall broke, everything behind it started falling.

Paulina quietly stood.

“Dad…”

Ernesto looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“I knew about the dinner.””

Mateo looked shocked.

“You did?””

She nodded.

“I thought it was just a family thing.””

“Test her?””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t know about that.””

Beatriz looked at her daughter.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

Paulina flinched.

The room became uncomfortable.

Because everyone had a piece of the truth.

And nobody wanted to hold it.

Camila walked toward me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For letting them use me.””

I studied her.

She looked nothing like the villain I imagined.

Just another person caught inside someone else’s plan.

“I should have refused,” she said.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

At least she admitted it.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, he looked surprised.

“Send it immediately.””

He ended the call.

Mateo looked at him.

“What now?””

Daniel hesitated.

“A message from the trust office.””

“About what?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Mateo.

“They reviewed the original property records.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

He opened the message.

“Because there was a discrepancy.””

Ernesto stood.

“What discrepancy?””

Daniel looked at the document.

“The down payment records.””

I frowned.

“What about them?””

He slowly raised his eyes.

“The amount your family claimed to have contributed was not the amount recorded.””

Nobody spoke.

Mateo looked at his father.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel turned the page.

“It means someone lied.””

Then he placed the final report on the table.

And the name attached to the missing money was not Ernesto.

May you like

Not Beatriz.

It was Mateo.
