Chapter 10: The Money That Was Never Theirs
I stared at the report.
Mateo stared at the report.
Everyone stared at the report.
The accusation sat there in black and white.
Mateo Cárdenas.
The room became painfully quiet.
“No,” Mateo whispered.
Daniel looked at him.
“Read the attached explanation.””
Mateo took the papers.
His hands shook slightly.
I moved closer.
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he looked at me.
“I don’t understand.””
“Read it.””
He swallowed.
“The trust office reviewed all payments related to the property.””
“And?””
He looked down.
“The contribution from my grandfather was transferred through my personal account.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Mateo looked devastated.
“I thought my father handled it.””
Ernesto’s face changed.
A tiny reaction.
But enough.
Mateo noticed.
“Dad?””
Ernesto looked away.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Dig through old decisions.””
Mateo stepped forward.
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“You lied about the house.””
“I protected family assets.””
“You told me my grandfather gave money directly to you.””
Ernesto said nothing.
“Didn’t you?””
Silence.
That silence answered.
I felt a wave of anger.
Not because of the money.
Because of the years.
Years of believing I owed them something.
Years of hearing how much they had sacrificed.
Years of being reminded that their help came with conditions.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“The records indicate the funds were intended for Mateo to use when purchasing a home with his future spouse.””
Mateo laughed bitterly.
“So my own money was used as a reason to control my marriage?””
Beatriz looked at him.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I finally understand.””
The room felt different.
The power had shifted.
They had arrived expecting to judge me.
Instead, they were being exposed.
Ernesto sat down heavily.
“This family is falling apart because of pride.””
Mateo looked at him.
“No.””
He glanced around the room.
“This family is falling apart because nobody wanted to admit the truth.””
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
Then Daniel pointed at the report.
“There is another issue.””
I looked at him.
“Another one?””
He nodded.
“The trust office discovered something else.””
Mateo sighed.
“What now?””
Daniel turned a page.
“After the property purchase, someone attempted to alter ownership records.””
My stomach dropped.
“Alter?””
“Yes.””
Mateo looked confused.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the paperwork.
“The request came from a family member.””
Everyone froze.
Beatriz slowly sat down.
Ernesto looked at her.
“What did you do?””
Her face went pale.
“I was trying to fix things.””
Mateo stared.
“Mom.””
“I thought you would eventually understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That Valeria wasn’t the right person for you.””
The honesty was brutal.
Mateo stepped back.
“You tried to change ownership because you didn’t approve of my wife?””
Beatriz’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was protecting you.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were trying to erase her.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at the woman who had entered my home expecting me to cook for her.
A woman who had spent years pretending love gave her permission to control.
And suddenly, I understood something.
She didn’t hate me because I was weak.
She hated me because I wasn’t.
Daniel closed the folder.
“Because of these findings, the trust office requires a formal review.””
Ernesto looked up.
“A review of what?””
“Company leadership.””
His face changed.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Mateo looked at him.
“What happens now?””
Daniel gathered the papers.
“Tomorrow morning, the board will meet.””
“About my father?””
“About your father.””
The room went silent again.
Then Daniel added:
“And about who should lead the company next.””
Everyone looked at Mateo.
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because I don’t want to become him.””
That answer surprised me.
Daniel smiled slightly.
“Then perhaps that is exactly why you should.””
Mateo looked at the documents.
Then at me.
But before he could speak, his phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
It was from an unknown number.
“I know what your family did. And I have proof they’re hiding something much bigger than the house.””
Underneath the message was a photo.
A photo of Beatriz.
Standing outside a lawyer’s office.
With someone I recognized.
May you like
A person who should not have been involved.
Someone from my own past.
