The House They Tried to Take / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: The Family Meeting

The next morning, I arrived at Ernesto’s house carrying the deed.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I wanted them to understand something.

I had built my life too carefully to let anyone rewrite it.

Mateo walked beside me.

He looked nervous.

I looked around the driveway.

Every family member from the dinner was there.

Including someone I had never met.

A woman standing beside Beatriz.

Elegant.

Confident.

Familiar in a way I couldn’t explain.

Then Mateo stopped walking.

“Camila.””

The woman smiled.

“Hi, Mateo.””

I looked at my husband.

He looked like someone had pulled the floor away beneath him.

Beatriz noticed.

“Good. Everyone is here.””

I stepped forward.

“Before we begin, I have a question.””

She smiled.

“Of course.””

“Why is Camila here?””

Nobody answered.

Then Camila spoke.

“I think you deserve to know the history.””

I looked at her.

“The history of what?””

She glanced at Mateo.

“Of the life he almost had.””

The room became silent.

Mateo’s voice was sharp.

“Camila, stop.””

But she continued.

“Your husband’s family and mine had an agreement.””

“An agreement?””

Beatriz sat down.

“Valeria, you misunderstand.””

“No. I think I understand perfectly.””

Ernesto placed his hands on the table.

“This isn’t about insulting you.””

“Then what is it about?””

“The house.””

There it was again.

Always the house.

Ernesto opened a folder.

“When Mateo bought this property, our family contributed.””

I nodded.

“Yes. Your father gave money toward the down payment.””

“And that matters.””

“It matters. It doesn’t mean ownership.””

Beatriz smiled.

“You’re being emotional.””

“No. I’m being accurate.””

Mateo looked between us.

“Why are you doing this?””

Ernesto ignored him.

“We invested in Mateo’s future.””

I placed the deed on the table.

“And I invested too.””

Nobody spoke.

I opened it.

“My name is on this.””

Beatriz looked annoyed.

“For now.””

Those two words made my entire body go still.

“For now?””

Camila looked uncomfortable.

Even she seemed surprised.

Mateo stared at his mother.

“What does that mean?””

Beatriz didn’t answer.

Instead, she pushed another document across the table.

“This.””

Mateo picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he went completely silent.

“What is this?””

I watched his face.

“Mateo?””

He didn’t answer.

Ernesto spoke.

“It’s an agreement.””

“What agreement?””

Mateo looked at his father.

“You want me to sign this?””

Nobody responded.

I reached for the paper.

Mateo held it tightly.

“Wait.””

That scared me.

Because Mateo had never hidden anything from me.

Not until now.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“It says the house was purchased using family funds.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

“And if we separate…”

He stopped.

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?””

He looked at the final paragraph.

“They claim the property returns to the family.””

The room went silent.

Then I laughed.

A quiet, shocked laugh.

“They planned this.””

Mateo looked at me.

“What?””

“The dinner.””

His face changed.

“The test.””

Nobody moved.

“They wanted to see if I knew my place.””

Beatriz stood.

“We wanted to know if you respected this family.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“You wanted to know if I would let you control me.””

Camila looked at Mateo.

“You never told her.””

Mateo turned.

“Told her what?””

Camila hesitated.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“The reason your family is so desperate to remove her.””
