Chapter 11: The Person From My Past

I stared at the photo on Mateo’s phone.

At first, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.

It was impossible.

A familiar face.

A familiar place.

And a woman standing beside someone who had no reason to be part of this.

My own mother.

Lucía Hernández.

My mother, who had spent years telling me that family should never use love as a weapon.

My mother, who had sold a piece of her land to help me buy my first home.

My mother, standing beside Beatriz outside a law office.

Mateo looked at me carefully.

“Valeria?””

I couldn’t answer.

The room felt distant.

The voices around me disappeared.

All I could see was that image.

“Do you know why she was there?”” Daniel asked.

I shook my head slowly.

“No.””

Beatriz looked uncomfortable.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Uncomfortable.

Like she knew this moment was coming.

Mateo turned toward his mother.

“You knew?””

Beatriz didn’t respond.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””

I laughed quietly.

“Funny.””

Everyone looked at me.

“Because it seems like everything in this family happens exactly the way someone planned it.””

Beatriz looked down.

For once, she had no argument.

Daniel stepped closer.

“We need to understand the timeline.””

He looked at me.

“Valeria, did your mother ever discuss the house after the purchase?””

“No.””

“Did she ever suggest changing ownership?””

“No.””

I looked at Beatriz.

“But apparently she discussed something with you.””

My mother-in-law stayed silent.

Mateo’s voice became sharper.

“Answer her.””

Beatriz looked at her son.

“I contacted Lucía because I needed someone who understood Valeria.””

My heart sank.

“Understood me?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

Beatriz hesitated.

“She told me things.””

The room went still.

“What things?””

Beatriz looked away.

“About your past.””

My stomach tightened.

Everyone has a past.

Everyone has moments they wish they had handled differently.

But my mother knew which memories belonged to me.

Which wounds were private.

Which stories were not hers to share.

“What did she tell you?””

Beatriz said nothing.

I stepped closer.

“What did my mother tell you?””

Finally, she whispered:

“That you had always been afraid of losing control.””

The words hit me.

Not because they were true.

Because they were twisted.

I had spent my life fighting to create stability.

To build something no one could take away.

Beatriz had turned that into a weakness.

Mateo looked at me.

“Valeria…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

I needed answers.

I looked at my mother-in-law.

“Why would my mother talk to you?””

She swallowed.

“Because I asked her.””

The confession shocked everyone.

“You asked her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Beatriz looked at the floor.

“Because I thought if someone from your family understood my concerns, you would listen.””

I stared at her.

“My concerns?””

“That you were changing Mateo.””

There it was again.

The same accusation.

That loving someone meant controlling them.

That a strong woman must be dangerous.

Daniel looked at Beatriz.

“Did you discuss legal documents with Mrs. Hernández?””

Beatriz didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Mateo’s face changed.

“Mom.””

She finally looked at him.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

The admission surprised everyone.

“Afraid of what?”” Mateo asked.

“That after marriage, I would lose my son.””

The room became quiet.

For one second, I saw something different.

Not a villain.

A frightened person who had chosen the worst possible way to deal with fear.

But understanding someone’s pain did not erase the damage they caused.

“You were afraid of losing him,” I said.

She nodded.

“And you tried to make sure I lost him instead.””

Beatriz looked at me.

No defense.

No excuse.

Just silence.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What happened?”” Mateo asked.

Daniel listened for several seconds.

Then he looked at us.

“The board meeting has been moved.””

Ernesto frowned.

“Moved to when?””

“Today.””

Everyone froze.

“Why?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Because someone submitted evidence that changes everything.””

Mateo looked confused.

“What evidence?””

Daniel looked at the message again.

Then he said:

“Evidence showing that your father and mother were not the only people involved in the ownership dispute.””

My heart sank.

“Who else?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The person who provided the evidence.””

He turned the phone around.

The sender’s name was visible.

And I knew exactly who it was.

May you like

My father.

A man I had not spoken to in twelve years.
