Chapter 7: The Letter He Never Wanted Me To Read
I held the envelope in my hands.
It was heavier than paper should have felt.
Maybe because secrets had weight.
Maybe because I knew whatever was inside would change how I saw this family forever.
Mateo stood beside me.
“Open it.””
His voice was quiet.
But certain.
I broke the seal.
Inside was a letter written in careful handwriting.
The first line immediately made my breath catch.
“Dear Valeria, if you are reading this, then my fears about my family were correct.””
I looked at Mateo.
He looked confused.
I continued.
“I never had the opportunity to meet you, but I know the kind of person Mateo needs beside him.””
The room stayed silent.
Everyone listened.
“He spent his entire life trying to earn approval from people who loved him only when he followed their plans.””
Mateo lowered his eyes.
I felt something tighten in my chest.
Because those words were not about a house.
They were about a son.
The letter continued.
“I watched my own family confuse sacrifice with ownership. I watched kindness become a debt. I do not want that for Mateo.””
My eyes moved faster.
Then I reached the sentence that changed everything.
“If Beatriz ever tells you the house belongs to the family, know that she signed a document years ago confirming the opposite.””
I looked up.
Beatriz closed her eyes.
Mateo stared at her.
“She knew.””
Nobody answered.
The letter continued.
“She signed because I gave her a choice. Accept Mateo’s future, or admit she wanted control more than his happiness.””
Ernesto suddenly stood.
“That’s enough.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Sit down.””
The authority in his voice surprised everyone.
Ernesto slowly sat.
I kept reading.
“I hope you never have to fight for your place in a family that should have welcomed you.””
A tear formed in my eye.
Not because I was hurt.
Because someone who had never met me had understood exactly what was happening.
The final paragraph was short.
“Protect Mateo, but do not protect him from consequences. Love him enough to let him face the truth.””
I folded the letter.
Nobody spoke.
Then Mateo said:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because I should have seen it.””
“You didn’t create this.””
“No.””
He looked at his mother.
“But I allowed it.””
That sentence hurt more.
Because it was true.
Beatriz finally spoke.
“You’re choosing a piece of paper over your family.””
Mateo turned.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I’m choosing honesty over manipulation.””
Her face changed.
“You think you know everything now?””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“But I know enough.””
Beatriz laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what I did for you.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
“Tell me what you did.””
She looked around the room.
Nobody rescued her.
Not Ernesto.
Not Paulina.
Not Camila.
For the first time, she was alone.
“I protected your future.””
Mateo shook his head.
“You controlled it.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
His voice broke slightly.
“You chose my career. You chose who I should marry. You chose what kind of husband I should be.””
Beatriz’s eyes moved toward me.
“And she changed you.””
Mateo looked at me.
Then back at his mother.
“She saved me.””
The words landed harder than anything else.
I watched Beatriz absorb them.
Then she smiled.
But it wasn’t kindness.
It was warning.
“You really think this ends here?””
Mateo frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She reached into her purse.
Pulled out her phone.
And placed it on the table.
“I thought you deserved to know why Camila came back.””
Everyone looked at Camila.
Her face changed.
“Beatriz.””
But it was too late.
Beatriz pressed play.
A recording began.
A familiar voice filled the room.
Mateo’s voice.
From years ago.
Before me.
Before our marriage.
Before everything.
May you like
And after five seconds, I recognized the words.
Because they were about me.
