The House They Tried to Take / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Signature That Betrayed Her

Nobody moved.

Not Beatriz.

Not Ernesto.

Not even Mateo.

The only sound in the room was the soft ticking of the old clock hanging above Ernesto’s dining table.

Daniel Salazar placed the document down carefully.

“Your grandfather requested that this agreement remain sealed unless someone attempted to challenge the ownership of the property.””

Mateo looked at his mother.

“Why is your signature on it?””

Beatriz’s face tightened.

“I don’t know what you think you’re seeing.””

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

“I can explain.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“The document was signed seven years ago. It was an acknowledgment from Mrs. Cárdenas confirming the conditions under which the money for the house was provided.””

I looked at the paper again.

The signature was unmistakable.

Beatriz Cárdenas.

But the date was what bothered me.

Seven years ago.

Before Mateo and I bought the house.

Before we even started planning our wedding.

“What conditions?”” Mateo asked.

Daniel opened the folder.

“The money your grandfather provided was never intended to create ownership rights for your parents.””

Ernesto immediately interrupted.

“That’s not true.””

Daniel didn’t even look at him.

“It was intended as support for Mateo’s future family.””

Mateo stared.

“Future family?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your grandfather believed that a marriage was a partnership. He specifically stated that the property should belong equally to Mateo and the person he chose to build his life with.””

Beatriz’s expression hardened.

“That was his opinion.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“That was his legal instruction.””

The room became colder.

I watched Beatriz carefully.

For the first time, she wasn’t acting like someone in control.

She looked cornered.

And cornered people often became dangerous.

“So why did you sign it?”” Mateo asked.

Beatriz looked at her son.

“I was protecting you.””

“No.””

His voice surprised everyone.

“No, Mom. You were protecting yourself.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You don’t understand what we sacrificed.””

“What did you sacrifice?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the answer wasn’t simple.

They had helped him.

But they had also used that help like a chain.

I thought about all the little comments over the years.

The jokes about whose house it really was.

The reminders about family loyalty.

The expectation that I should always say yes.

It had never been about dinner.

It had never been about respect.

It was about control.

Daniel tapped the second page.

“There is another section.””

Mateo looked at him.

“What section?””

“One that explains why this document was created.””

Beatriz suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No, Mrs. Cárdenas. It is not.””

Her face went pale.

The attorney continued.

“Your father-in-law was concerned that family pressure might influence Mateo’s decisions.””

Mateo frowned.

“My grandfather thought that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because he witnessed similar behavior before.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Mateo asked the question everyone was thinking.

“Before?””

Daniel nodded.

“With another matter involving your mother.””

Beatriz looked furious.

“You have no right to discuss family history.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“I have every right. I was instructed to reveal it if this situation occurred.””

Mateo looked at me.

“What situation?””

Daniel’s eyes moved between him and Beatriz.

“A situation where someone tried to remove your wife’s rights to the home.””

The words hit the room like a door slamming shut.

I looked at Mateo.

He looked devastated.

Not because of the house.

Because his mother had known.

She had known the truth.

And she still brought twelve people into our home to pressure me.

“Mom,” Mateo said quietly.

Beatriz didn’t answer.

“Did you know this document existed?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Everyone reacted.

Even Ernesto.

“You knew?””

Beatriz looked at her husband.

“I handled it.””

Mateo stared.

“You handled it?””

“I thought I was doing what was best.””

“For who?””

She looked at him.

“For you.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“For you.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Because everyone knew he was right.

Then Daniel opened his briefcase again.

“There is one more document.””

My heart sank.

Another document.

Another secret.

“How many surprises did my family prepare?”” Mateo whispered.

Daniel removed a sealed envelope.

“This one was left with instructions to give directly to Valeria.””

My name.

Again.

I reached for it.

But before I opened it, Beatriz spoke.

“Don’t.””

I stopped.

Not because she ordered me.

Because fear had entered her voice.

“What is inside?”” I asked.

She looked away.

And that was when I realized something.

May you like

Whatever was in that envelope…

Was worse for her than losing the house.
