Chapter 8: The Original Birth Record

I drove for almost an hour without realizing where I was going.

My hands stayed tight around the steering wheel.

The folder sat on the passenger seat.

Every few minutes, I looked at it.

Like it might disappear.

Like the truth inside it might somehow become less painful if I waited long enough.

But it didn’t.

When I finally stopped, I was outside my childhood home.

The place where I grew up.

The place where my mother still lived.

The same house where I learned what family meant.

Except now I wasn’t sure what family meant anymore.

I knocked.

A few seconds later, the door opened.

My mother froze when she saw me.

“Daniel?””

She looked past me.

“Is everything okay?””

I held up the folder.

Her expression changed immediately.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You found them.””

My heart sank.

“You knew.””

She stepped back.

“Come inside.””

I didn’t move.

“No.””

My voice was colder than I intended.

“I want the truth here.””

My mother looked at the street.

Then back at me.

“Daniel, this isn’t as simple as you think.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone said that.

“It never is, is it?””

She looked hurt.

“You have to understand—”

“No.””

I interrupted.

“You have to understand something.””

I opened the folder.

“You let me raise a child believing I knew the truth.””

Her face softened.

“Elijah is your son.””

“I know that.””

My voice broke.

“That’s not the point.””

For a moment, she looked like my mother again.

The woman who held my hand when I was scared.

The woman who taught me right from wrong.

And that made it worse.

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“There it is again.””

I stepped closer.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

My mother sat down.

“I made a terrible decision.””

“When?””

She looked at the folder.

“The day Vanessa came to me.””

I froze.

“Vanessa came to you?””

She nodded.

“She was desperate.””

My jaw tightened.

“And you helped her?””

“I helped her hide something.””

The honesty shocked me.

“What exactly?””

My mother’s hands trembled.

“Rachel wanted to keep Elijah.””

“I know.””

“But Vanessa believed she could give him more.””

My mother swallowed.

“She told me you would leave if you knew the truth.””

I stared at her.

“She used my fear.””

“No.””

My mother looked up.

“She used mine.””

The room went silent.

I opened the folder again.

There it was.

The original document.

The signature.

The one Marcus mentioned.

I looked closer.

Then my blood went cold.

Because beneath Rachel’s name was another signature.

Vanessa’s.

But next to it was something I didn’t understand.

A legal statement.

A statement saying Rachel had voluntarily given up custody.

Except Rachel had never told me that.

And according to the date…

The document had been signed after Elijah was already born.

I looked at my mother.

“Did Rachel sign this?””

My mother didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Did she?””

My mother whispered:

“No.””

My heart dropped.

“Then why does this exist?””

She looked terrified.

“Because Vanessa created it.””

I stepped back.

For the first time, I heard the full weight of what everyone had been hiding.

This wasn’t just a misunderstanding.

This wasn’t just fear.

This was a carefully built lie.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Rachel?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“Where are you?””

“No time.””

I heard panic in the background.

“What happened?””

“She found me.””

My body went tense.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Vanessa.””

I looked toward the front door.

My mother suddenly stood up.

“Daniel…”

I turned.

“What?””

She looked frightened.

“She shouldn’t be able to find Rachel.””

“Why?””

My mother’s face went pale.

“Because the only person who knew Rachel’s location…”

She stopped.

May you like

I waited.

“Was me.””
