Chapter 3: The Truth Buried Beneath Our Home

I kept the phone against my ear, waiting for the stranger to speak again.

The entire house felt like it had stopped breathing.

Vanessa stood across from me, watching my expression carefully. Rachel sat inside the hidden room, silent but alert. And Elijah remained in the hallway, holding his stuffed dinosaur tightly against his chest.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man on the phone didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, I heard a slow breath.

“My name is Marcus Hill.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because I know what’s behind that wall.””

My eyes moved toward the hidden room.

The man continued.

“I know Rachel is there. I know Vanessa told you she never met her. And I know the story she gave you about Elijah’s birth was not the truth.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

“Not far.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, hang up.””

I looked at her.

The fear in her voice wasn’t anger anymore.

It was panic.

That scared me more.

“Why?””

She opened her mouth, but no words came out.

The voice on the phone became quieter.

“Daniel, do not let Vanessa convince you to close that door again.””

I stared at the hidden room.

Then I looked at my wife.

For ten years, I had loved Vanessa.

I knew the way she laughed when she was nervous. I knew the songs she hummed while cooking. I knew how she always organized the kitchen cabinets because she hated mess.

But standing there, looking at her beside a secret room she had hidden from me, I realized something terrifying.

I didn’t know her at all.

I ended the call.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said softly.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She looked toward Elijah.

“Not in front of him.””

I immediately moved between them.

“No more secrets.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Rachel slowly stood up inside the room.

“She always says that.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Stay out of this.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“After three years? After everything you did?””

I turned toward Rachel.

“What happened three years ago?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“I was working at a medical office downtown.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Rachel continued.

“One afternoon, I found documents that didn’t belong to me. Documents with Vanessa’s name on them.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What documents?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Adoption records.””

The room went silent.

I looked toward Elijah’s bedroom.

Then back at Rachel.

“What does that have to do with my son?””

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“Everything.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””

But I noticed something.

She didn’t say Rachel was lying.

She only told me not to listen.

That difference mattered.

I walked toward Vanessa.

“Tell me the truth.””

She looked away.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

Her eyes became wet.

“I was trying to protect our family.””

The words sounded familiar.

People always used them when they were about to justify something terrible.

“Protect us from what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“From me.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Rachel stepped closer to the doorway.

“Because I’m Elijah’s biological mother.””

The world seemed to go quiet.

I heard the refrigerator humming.

I heard the clock ticking.

I heard Elijah’s small footsteps moving closer.

But I couldn’t process the sentence.

“No.””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wish it wasn’t true.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

She was crying now.

Not denying it.

Crying.

“Vanessa?””

She wiped her face quickly.

“Daniel, please.””

“Is she telling the truth?””

A long silence followed.

And that silence answered me.

I stepped back.

My entire life with Elijah flashed through my mind.

His first steps.

His first words.

The nights I stayed awake when he was sick.

The drawings he made for me.

I had always called myself his father.

And I was.

But suddenly, I wondered how many pieces of his story had been stolen from me.

Elijah appeared beside the hallway wall.

“Daddy…”

I turned immediately.

His eyes were filled with confusion.

“Is she my mommy?””

No one answered.

Because no one knew how to explain something that should never have happened.

I walked over and hugged him.

“No matter what, I’m your dad.””

He held onto me.

Then Rachel whispered something that made me look up.

“Daniel…”

I turned.

“There’s something else.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Vanessa didn’t just hide me because I was Elijah’s mother.””

She paused.

“She hid me because I know what happened the night Elijah was born.””

Vanessa suddenly moved toward her.

May you like

“Stop talking.””

And that reaction told me there was a much bigger secret waiting.
