Chapter 4: The Night Everything Changed

I didn’t sleep that night.

How could I?

Every room in the house felt different.

The living room where Elijah played.

The kitchen where Vanessa and I shared thousands of meals.

The hallway where our family photos hung.

Everything looked the same.

But nothing felt the same.

At 3:17 in the morning, I sat alone at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee growing cold in front of me.

The hidden room was closed again.

But this time, I had locked the door from the outside.

Rachel was safe inside the guest room.

Vanessa was upstairs.

And my son was asleep.

At least, I hoped he was.

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Vanessa stood there wearing a sweater, her face tired.

“Can we talk?””

I looked back at my coffee.

“I’ve been waiting for ten years.””

She sat across from me.

For the first time since I met her, she looked small.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

I laughed quietly.

“How did you think I would find out? You were going to tell me about the secret room during dinner?””

She looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I leaned forward.

“You hid a woman inside our house.””

Her eyes closed.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She didn’t answer.

That was becoming her favorite response.

I stood up.

“No. You don’t get to be scared anymore. I do.””

Her expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“I need the truth.””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Rachel and I knew each other before you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She wasn’t a stranger.””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“She was my closest friend.””

The words confused me even more.

“Then why was she locked away?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Because everything happened so fast.””

I stared at her.

“Start from the beginning.””

She took a deep breath.

“Rachel was pregnant.””

I waited.

“She was young. She didn’t have support. She thought adoption was the only option.””

My chest tightened.

“And you?””

“I was there for her.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I helped her through the pregnancy.””

“Then why did you tell me Elijah was yours?””

Her silence lasted too long.

“Vanessa.””

She finally looked at me.

“Because I lost my baby.””

The anger in me paused.

Just for a moment.

She continued.

“I was supposed to have a child. But I didn’t.””

Her voice broke.

“When Elijah was born, I saw how much Rachel loved him. And I saw how much I wanted that life.””

I stared at her.

“You took him.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I convinced myself I could give him a better life.””

“That’s not your choice to make.””

“I know.””

For the first time, she admitted it.

And somehow that hurt more.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the neighborhood was silent.

Normal.

Like my world hadn’t collapsed.

“Why keep Rachel alive?””

Vanessa looked terrified again.

“I didn’t plan for it to happen like this.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She swallowed.

“Rachel found out the truth.””

“About Elijah?””

She nodded.

“She wanted to tell you.””

I turned around.

“And you stopped her.””

Vanessa looked away.

Before I could respond, a sound came from the hallway.

A small creak.

We both looked.

Elijah was standing there.

He was holding a folded piece of paper.

His drawing.

But there was something written on the back.

“Daddy…”

I walked toward him.

“What is it?””

He looked scared.

“Rachel told me to give you this if Mommy got angry.””

My heart stopped.

“Rachel talked to you?””

Elijah nodded.

“She said I needed to know something.””

I unfolded the paper.

At first, I saw only a child’s drawing.

A house.

A family.

A sun in the corner.

Then I saw the words written in adult handwriting beneath it.

My hands started shaking.

Because the message wasn’t from Rachel.

It was from someone else.

It said:

*“Daniel, if you are reading this, Vanessa already knows I escaped. Do not trust anything she tells you next.””*

I looked up.

The hallway was empty.

May you like

Rachel was gone.

And the hidden room door downstairs was slowly opening by itself.
